Campus Facility Services (CFS) is proud to provide all Indiana University Indianapolis students, faculty, staff, and visitors with a high-quality physical environment. We provide maintenance, grounds and custodial services for more than 70 buildings and parking garages and over 300 acres of lawns, trees, plantings, sidewalks and parking lots. The department is also a frequent partner with IU Capital Projects on campus renovation projects and new construction initiatives.

Job Summary

  • Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to determine materials required and dimensions of structure to be fabricated.
  • Builds or repairs doors, framework, floors, ceilings, shingle roofs, or other fixtures in buildings. Installs structures and fixtures such as roofing, walls, frames, ceilings, flooring dead bolts, keyed entry components, panic devices, closures) using carpenter's hand and power tools.
  • Performs millwork, cabinetry and finish carpentry by setting up and operating power tools and machinery to size, plane, joint and mold lumber to desired dimensions. Cuts tongues, grooves, bevels, beads or molding patterns. Cuts and installs custom moldings and trim.
  • Uses hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue to make framework or props. Fabricates and installs chalkboards, bulletin boards, blinds, and projection screens.
  • Measures dimensions of area and determines plumb of walls or ceilings using plumb-line and level.
  • Assembles, fits, and attaches glass to framing; attaches mounting strips and moldings to surface and applies mastic cement, putty, or screws to secure glass into position; applies glazing.
  • Repairs Venetian blinds and roll shades using basic hand tools. Reinstalls to window if removed.
  • Drives vehicle.
  • Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
  • Participates in the training of apprentices and/or other workers as needed.

Qualifications


EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 5 years verifiable journey level experience in the carpentry field OR
  • Certificate in Department Of Labor (DOL) apprenticed carpentry trade

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire

  • Examples: glass cutter, putty knife, propane torch, stationary power equipment (table saw, mortise machine, planer, jointer, sander, lathe, radial arm saw, drill press, band saw, tenon machine) and hand-held electric tools (saws, planes, router, drills, jackhammer, grinder, sanders, etc.), tile cutters, tub saws, concrete finishing tools, spackling tools
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes, regulations or ordinances
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to use a computer
  • Ability to determine the appropriate tools and equipment needed on the job and use them safely
  • May be required to acquire and maintain asbestos abatement, supervisor certification or other OSHA required certifications
  • Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds

Working Conditions / Demands


This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
