Are you looking to gain construction experience and want to learn more skills to make a real difference in your community? We are looking for entry level Carpenter Apprentices to learn and help onsite with home building projects. You will have the chance to work alongside a Construction Project Manager while they teach volunteers and future homeowners how to build a house. Safety, Job Site Safety, Community, Reading and understanding blueprints, measuring, basic tool knowledge, framing, material selection/care, Insulation, Sheetrocking, flooring, roofing, siding, painting, trim, window/door installation, landscape and water management, permitting/inspection process.

Department: Construction Staff

FLSA Status: Full Time Hourly, Non Exempt

Schedule: Monday-Friday (no weekend emergencies or last-minute overtime demands), Saturdays when needed, especially May-November

Reports To: Construction Project Managers and Supervisors

Supervises: On-Site Volunteers

Primary Responsibilities:

Safety:

• Effectively communicate to volunteers and contractors that safety is the top priority on the construction site.
• Ensure that all safety policies and procedures established by the affiliate are adhered to at all times.

Construction:

• Assist in day-to-day construction activities to support timely project completion.
• Help unload and organize tools, equipment, and materials delivered to the worksite.
• Support subcontractors and tradespeople by preparing materials and maintaining a clean, organized workspace.
• Follow instructions from managers and supervisors and coordinate with team members on basic tasks.
• Keep the job site clean, safe, and free of hazards to ensure a productive work environment.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work site, minimizing disruption to homeowners, neighbors, and subcontractors.
• Perform other general labor duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Basic communication skills and the ability to follow instructions from supervisors and work cooperatively with coworkers, volunteers, and subcontractors.
• Willingness to learn how to read simple residential plans and drawings.
• General awareness of safety practices and interest in learning about building codes and inspections.
• Ability to stay focused and complete tasks efficiently under supervision.
• Willingness to take direction and help solve minor issues with guidance from supervisors.
• Positive attitude and ability to work well in a team environment.
• Openness to learning about warranty issues and how they are resolved.

Qualifications Needed:

• Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
• High School graduate or High School equivalency.
• Basic familiarity with construction tools, equipment, and job site procedures (not required).
• Any training or coursework in construction is a plus.
• Experience on residential or multi-family job sites is a plus.
• Willingness to learn and grow in the construction trade; training will be provided.
• Nonprofit or Habitat for Humanity experience is a plus but not required.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:

• Ability to safely move around an active construction site, including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
• Ability to use hand and power tools safely, with training provided as needed.
• Must have reliable transportation; a valid driver's license is preferred.
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Compensation Range:

Starting wage: $18.00-22.00 per hour. Starting pay is based on applicant's background and experience. Benefits include a health reimbursement plan (up to $6,350.00 per year, earned monthly), great combined 200 hours of vacation and sick time, ten paid holidays, participation in Vermont Saves retirement plan, and a 20% staff discount at the Habitat Restore.

This sample pay scale shows possible growth opportunities over two years. It is based on meeting job goals, completing required training and certifications, and learning the skills needed to do the job well. Please note that this is just an example and may not match what successful applicants will actually be paid. Pay scales can change due to various factors and are not guaranteed.

Sample Progression Example:

• Starting wage - $18.00
• After 6 months with completion of First Aid, CPR certification and Habitat Competent Person Training - $20.00
• After 1 year with completion of OSHA 10 - $22.00
• At 2 years graduate to Crew Leader with completion of management training - $25.00
