DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports the Range Operations Branch at Fort Rucker, AL. Makes and repairs wooden items, studies blueprints or drawings of articles to be constructed or repaired, and plans sequence of cutting or shaping operations to be performed. Marks outline or dimensions of parts on paper or lumber stock, according to blueprint or drawing specifications, matches materials for color, grain, or texture, sets up and operates woodworking machines, such as power saws, jointer, and shaper, to cut and shape parts from wood stocks. This worker trims component parts of joints to insure snug fit, using hand tools, such as planes, chisels, or wood files; bores holes for insertion of screws or dowels by hand or using boring machine, glues, fits, and clamps parts and subassemblies together to form complete unit using clamps or clamping machine, and drives nails or other fasteners into joints at designated places to reinforce joints. Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints of articles to prepare articles for finishing, may dip, brush, or spray assembled articles with protective materials, such as stain, varnish or paint, and may install hardware, such as hinges, catches, and drawer pulls. Performs general maintenance repair to buildings, structures, fences, concrete, asphalt pads, range support facilities, LRC obstacles, and similar training support structures. Performs duties generally assigned to Grounds Laborers as required. The Woodworker constructs and repairs items such as targets and target frames, firing limit markers. Studies specifications: and measures, marks, and cuts boards, using patterns, templates, ruler, pencil, and hand and power saws when fabricating and/or repairing metal, wood, three-dimensional and cardboard targets, and install targets on various devices. Repair and replace Safety Limit Markers, Range Lane Markers, Firing Point markers and all other markers as required.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Demonstrates relevant experience in the above duties and responsibilities.

  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 100 lbs and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Capable of performing field work involving heavy lifting and climbing over rough terrain under various weather conditions.

  • Proof of US Citizenship required.

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Must be capable of operating hand or power tools.

  • Must have a valid driver's license, maintain Installation driving privileges and complete a Defensive Driving Course.

  • Must be able to operate 4X4 vehicles safely on rough trails/roads/terrain.

  • Must be able to pass all security requirements IAW military installation Provost Marshall's Policy to gain access to the installation.

Working Environment:

The work environment consists of both office and field settings within the Fort Rucker Gunnery Range and Training Complex. The position may require frequent visits to range and maintenance sites, including exposure to noise, weather, and outdoor conditions typical of live-fire training environments. The Project Manager may be required to work extended hours, weekends, or holidays based on mission schedules and contract needs.
