The hiring rate for this position is $31.00.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Carpenter is responsible for construction and maintenance related items associated with general carpentry at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). This includes but is not limited to: execution of general construction, woodworking (finish and unfinished), wall and floor tiling, carpeting, wall patching, painting, caulking, performing general preventative maintenance (PM) work and inspections, responding to radio requests and emergencies, completing electronic work orders as assigned and coordinating work priorities with the Manager - Building Operations.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs routine maintenance of aesthetic finishes, which includes but is not limited to: patching/painting, staining, sanding, grouting, sealing, caulking, etc.
- Performs construction and repairs to facility buildings, architectural components, and furniture.
- Replacement of flooring and ceiling components such as carpet tile squares, vinyl tile, acoustic tile, etc.
- Hanging of paintings, banners and other signage.
- Conducts facility inspections (rounds) as required, inspecting equipment and systems for proper operation.
- Utilize tablet-based interface to generate, assign and close out work orders through the Institutes work order system.
- Follows blueprints, specifications, manufacturers literature and as directed.
- Interacts in a positive, professional and helpful manner with all campus stakeholders, including students, chefs, faculty, staff, outside vendors and campus guests.
- Communicates safety information and other information proactively to the right people and works to make sure that key people know about safety issues and important concerns in a timely and clear manner.
- Coordinates and conducts work in a way to minimize disruption to classes and other campus activities.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all campus systems and kitchen equipment as required.
- Understands and follows all codes and safety practices required by the CIA or governing agencies.
- Proactively advises supervisor of restocking needs for supplies and performs periodic campus-wide quality inspections and develops work orders as needed.
- Assists outside contractors and accompany them as needed. Reports concerns with contractor work to their supervisor to ensure work is being completed safely and professionally.
- May be required to assist with emergencies, special event set-ups and break-downs, which may be assigned after normal business hours, including nights and weekends.
- Assists Facilities Managers and Supervisors and others as assigned, with general projects and maintenance work in support of supporting trades and contractors at the Hyde Park campus.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
- Three (3) years of experience in carpentry trades.
Licenses / Certifications:
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in a commercial kitchen or equivalent industrial equipment environment.
- Certifications in mechanical lift operations (scissor and boom).
- Completed a formal apprenticeship, lasting four (4) years, or have a similar number of years of experience working as a carpenter or under the supervision of a master carpenter.
- Certified in OSHA 10 or higher.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Must be able to read plans and carry them out using the tools of the trade.
- Must have working knowledge of carpentry, furniture repair, tile work, sheet-rocking/taping, painting, and wallpapering.
- Must be able to work on his/her own under the general direction of the Building Operations Manager and other Managers/Supervisors.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Finish cabinetry and/or furniture fabrication.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be available based upon business needs with prior notification to work on evenings and weekends or in the event of an emergency.
- Under special circumstances may be required to temporarily work on different shifts or off hours and report to various supervisors based upon the needs of the Institute.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures, either hot or cold; temperatures can have a wide range including from -10 F to +120 F. Required to work outdoors, sometimes in extreme winter temperatures; in electrical rooms, crawl spaces and confined areas.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, use hands to grasp, handle and feel materials, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and taste or smell.
- Must be able to supply initial set of hand tools.
- Must be able to supply initial pair of safety toe work shoe/boot.
