Find The RightJob.

After 85+ years on Chicago corners, we’re bringing that same energy, that same flavor, and that same neighborhood warmth to California for the very first time — and we’re hiring the founding crew right now.

If you’ve got a big personality, a quick hand on the register, and the genuine warmth to make every person who steps up to the counter feel like a regular — this is your spot. You’re not just ringing up orders. You’re the first and last impression Jim’s Original makes on every single customer.

Your Role at the Counter

As a Cashier, you’re the voice and face of Jim’s Original. You greet every customer the moment they step up — “Next Up!”, “Next Please!”, “What can I make for you?” — take their order, enter it into the POS, and fire it to the line. The Sandwich Maker builds from what you send; the Cook grills to what you order. You keep the counter moving, the bag packed right, the cash balanced to the penny, and you send every customer away happy. It’s an open kitchen and the line can see you — your energy sets the pace for the whole crew.

What You’ll Actually Do

  • Greet every customer with real energy and a smile the moment they step to the counter — “Next Up!”, “Next Please!”, “What can I make for you?” — and make them feel genuinely welcome
  • Learn your regulars: recognize returning customers, remember their usual order, and make them feel like they never left Chicago
  • Take orders accurately and enter each one into the POS system to fire tickets to the line
  • Suggestive-sell wherever it fits naturally — missing a drink? A side of hot cheese? An Italian Ice? Offer it. A well-placed suggestion turns a good order into a great one
  • Handle cash, credit, and digital payment transactions accurately; count change back to every cash customer; verify large bills with the counterfeit checker
  • Issue the correct receipt for every transaction and complete cash drops when the till hits $300 in accordance with cash-handling procedures
  • Bag completed orders from the Sandwich Maker — fries, cheese sauce, sport peppers, ketchup, napkins, salt, soda, straws, and any special-request add-ons — with attention to accuracy and customization on every bag
  • Stay proactive: anticipate what the customer needs before they ask, especially during a rush
  • Take customer feedback and complaints with a positive attitude; resolve what you can on the spot and escalate to the Shift Leader or Manager when needed
  • Answer incoming phone calls in a friendly, helpful manner; take accurate messages and route calls appropriately
  • Maintain adequate stock at your register station — register tape, coins and change, condiments, paper items — and flag the Manager before anything runs out
  • Sell beer, wine, and hard seltzers in compliance with California’s Type 41 On-Sale Beer and Wine license
  • Card every customer purchasing alcohol who appears under 30; check for a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID
  • Recognize signs of visible intoxication and refuse alcohol service accordingly, regardless of the customer’s reaction
  • Train new Cashiers on Jim’s Original procedures and set the example for the rest of the front-of-house team
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, paying special attention to cash handling and health and safety

Who We’re Looking For

Prior register experience helps, but it’s not a requirement. What we can’t teach is warmth, hustle, and the instinct to make a stranger feel like a regular. If you have those, we’ll teach you everything else.

  • Prior experience in a customer-facing cashier, counter service, or hospitality role — helpful, not required
  • Comfort with POS systems and basic cash handling, or eagerness to learn during paid training
  • Rock-solid basic math — you’re counting change in front of customers, sometimes during a lunch rush
  • Natural warmth and a people-first attitude — every customer who steps up should feel like the most important person in the restaurant
  • Ability to suggestive-sell without being pushy: read the customer, make a genuine recommendation
  • Calm and accurate under pressure — a long line is not a reason to rush a transaction and make a cash error
  • Flexible availability across mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays — the rush hours are when we need you most
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Food Handler’s Certificate within 30 days of hire
  • Must complete California RBS (Responsible Beverage Service) training through a California ABC-approved provider within 60 days of hire — required to serve alcohol under our Type 41 On-Sale Beer and Wine license; we’ll point you to the right course
