Position Summary

The Roll-Off Driver / Swing Driver is responsible for safely operating roll-off trucks, including cable hoist and hook-lift equipment, to deliver, remove, exchange, dump, and reposition roll-off containers and compactors.

This position requires a dependable, safety-focused driver with strong roll-off experience who can also serve as a swing driver to cover routes for call-outs, vacations, no-call/no-shows, driver shortages, emergency work, breakdowns, and daily operational needs.

The driver must be able to operate safely in construction sites, commercial properties, industrial yards, transfer stations, landfills, tight customer locations, high-traffic areas, and areas with overhead or ground hazards.

Minimum Requirements

Candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years operating a vehicle requiring a CDL, or 1 year of equivalent military driving experience within the last 7 years
  • Minimum 3 years of waste industry experience preferred, with roll-off experience strongly required
  • Strong Written and Veral communication with management and customers
  • Valid Class A CDL with air-brake endorsement upon hire
  • or
  • Valid Class B CDL with air-brake endorsement upon hire
  • Current DOT medical card
  • Must be at least 24 years of age
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to:
  • Interact with the public
  • Understand highway traffic signs and signals
  • Respond to official questions
  • Complete records, reports, DVIRs, route paperwork, and safety documentation
  • Must have an acceptable driving record
  • Must be able to pass background check, drug screen, DOT requirements, and company road test
  • Must be dependable and available to work flexible hours, overtime, Rotating Saturdays, and emergency route coverage as neededNice to Have
  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school
  • Previous experience with Waste Management-style safety programs, Life Critical Rules, or similar corporate safety standards
  • Experience with tablets, route management software, GPS, Samsara, FleetMind, ServiceCore, Soft-Pak, Tower, TrashFlow, or similar systems
  • Experience servicing construction, industrial, commercial, municipal, and compactor customers
  • Ability to train or mentor newer drivers
  • Bilingual

Essential Responsibilities

The Roll-Off Driver / Swing Driver will:

  • Operate assigned vehicle in accordance with company safety rules, OSHA requirements, DOT requirements, and all local, state, and federal laws
  • Safely operate roll-off trucks, including cable hoist and hook-lift systems
  • Deliver, remove, exchange, dump, and reposition roll-off containers and compactors
  • Perform complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle
  • Document inspections using the standard DVIR — Driver Vehicle Inspection Report
  • Immediately report all unsafe situations, vehicle defects, safety concerns, or service-related issues to the Operations Manager or Dispatch
  • Follow daily route assignments as directed by Operations Manager, Foremen, or Dispatch
  • Complete assigned work safely, efficiently, and professionally
  • Cover open routes due to:
  • Driver call-outs
  • Vacations
  • No-call/no-shows
  • Injuries
  • Breakdowns
  • Emergency service needs
  • Special projects
  • Staffing shortages
  • Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer service needs
  • Attend, participate, lead in all scheduled safety meetings, training programs, briefings, and operational meetings
  • Work closely with Operations Manager and Dispatch to improve route efficiency and identify best practices
  • Notify Operations Manager of all incidents, accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, or customer-site damage
  • Notify Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including:
  • Closed or impassable streets
  • Blocked containers
  • Unsafe access
  • Containers too heavy to service
  • Overloaded containers
  • Overhead wires
  • Soft ground
  • Customer-site hazards
  • Equipment issues
  • Communicate customer requests, complaints, extra service needs, and service issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch
  • Completely dump all containers and leave the customer’s location clean and free of avoidable debris
  • Secure container doors, latches, cables, hooks, tarps, chains, and loads before transport
  • Tarp loads required by company policy, landfill rules, DOT rules, or local regulations
  • Use safe backing procedures, including GOAL when needed
  • Maintain safe following distance, proper speed control, defensive driving habits, and professional road conduct
  • Complete end-of-day documentation, disposal tickets, route notes, DVIR, fuel logs, and check-out process

Swing Driver Expectations

Because this position supports daily route coverage, the driver must be able to:

  • Learn multiple roll-off routes and service areas
  • Operate different assigned roll-off trucks as needed
  • Cover both planned and unplanned absences
  • Adjust to same-day route changes
  • Work with Dispatch to prioritize emergency stops, carryovers, missed services, and extra services
  • Maintain strong attendance and reliability
  • Help stabilize service when staffing shortages occur
  • Support multiple lines of business when qualified and directed

This driver should be a self-starter with strong problem solver who can step into different routes without slowing down the operation.

Safety Expectations

The driver must always follow safe work practices, including:

  • Follow all company safety policies
  • Follow OSHA, DOT, landfill, transfer station, and customer-site safety requirements
  • Wear required PPE, including safety vest, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hard hat where required
  • Maintain three points of contact when entering and exiting equipment
  • Inspect surroundings before loading, unloading, backing, raising rails, or moving containers
  • Never raise the hoist under overhead wires, trees, buildings, signs, or other hazards
  • Report unsafe loads, spills, blocked access, overweight concerns, and property damage immediately
  • Never operate unsafe equipment
  • Never bypass required safety procedures to save time

Physical Requirements

Candidate must be able to:

  • Climb in and out of the truck multiple times daily
  • Sit for extended periods while driving
  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, lift, and climb as required
  • Handle tarps, container doors, chains, hooks, cables, latches, and truck controls
  • Work outside in heat, cold, rain, mud, dust, landfill conditions, and construction-site environments
  • Safely move around customer sites, disposal facilities, and uneven ground
  • Perform the physical duties required for roll-off service

Pay: $27.00 - $30.00 per hour
