SUMMARY:
This is skilled public safety work involving the protection of life and property through emergency response of extinguishing various types of fires, assisting paramedics and law enforcement during other emergencies. Work involves a wide variety of technical tasks in support of fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency and hazardous materials handling functions; to operate and maintain a variety of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; to perform investigative work and other special assignments; and to participate in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities.
Employees in this class are distinguished by the performance of the full range of duties assigned under the general supervision and by the performance of specialized work assigned. Employees at this experienced level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operational procedures and policies of the work unit having been trained such that they meet the current standards of a certified firefighter.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Any one position of this class may not include all duties listed, nor do listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.)
· Performs a variety of duties relating to fire prevention and suppression under immediate supervision.
· Responds to emergency calls; provide appropriate services as required including emergency rescue and fire suppression; prepare reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned.
· Drives and operates motor-driven equipment under special instructions and limited conditions and on a relief basis.
· Operate, inspect, perform minor repair and preventative maintenance, and perform other technical tasks related to the apparatus and equipment of the Moss Point Fire Department.
· Rescue trapped or injured people; provide necessary first aid in the absence of medical services personnel; operate numerous types of rescues, emergency and fire suppression equipment as necessary.
· Participate in training to maintain the knowledge, skills and abilities required to meet the current standards for Firefighter covering the areas of fire alarms and communications, emergency medical care, fire behavior, rescue, safety, overhaul and inspections and the use of equipment and techniques including portable extinguisher, SCBA, forcible entry, ventilation, ropes, hoses, nozzles and appliances, fire streams and sprinklers, salvage, and the use of ladders and water supplies.
· Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned station; ensure that all equipment and apparatus is in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls.
· Participate in a variety of fire prevention and operations activities and programs including training, fire investigations, code enforcement, oversight of the fire scene and equipment operation and maintenance; participate in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations.
· Study street and apartment locations in assigned areas; study building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in assigned areas; study pre-emergency plans.
· May assume the duties of Firefighter when assigned; drive and operate apparatus and direct firefighting and rescue operations in this capacity and assume responsibility for assigned firefighting personnel and equipment.
· Learn and use departmental computer equipment and input various data.
· Give tours of assigned fire stations, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and public.
· Performs other duties as determined by the Battalion Chief.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

· Successful completion of State of Mississippi requirements for certification as Firefighter I-II
· Skilled in the operation and care of fire apparatus and equipment.
· Ability to tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
· Assists in resolving a variety of situations characterized by conflict or danger.
· Able to engage in moderate to strenuous physical activity and work long hours during emergency situations.
· Able to read and interpret a variety of maps, plans, and diagrams.
· Ability to prepare detailed reports and perform record maintenance duties in a timely manner.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, and public officials.
· Knowledge of English, spelling, and math.
· Knowledge of occupational hazards involved in the work and the safety precautions for safe performance of the job.
· Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; to determine proper course of action in various dangerous situations and use sound judgment in handling them.
· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
· Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
· Overall physical health: good reflexes, vision, and hearing; ability to maneuver through obstacles, while carrying loads of equipment and rescuing people; manual dexterity to operate communications devices and other equipment while wearing safety gear and navigating in low visibility; climbing and/or repelling.
· Ability to maintain a level of professional knowledge, skills, and drive to improve themselves with additional training, education, and experience.
· Ability to react and adjust to change productively and to handle other tasks as assigned.
· Must maintain a valid Mississippi vehicle operator’s license.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those the Fire Marshal encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Work is performed primarily in offices, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individuals are exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings and loud at an emergency scene.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
The employee must constantly move objects in excess of 20 pounds of force; and/or frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; and occasionally lift and/or move up to or more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· Must be at least 18 years of age.
· Must be certified as Firefighter I-II
· Lateral Transfers must have successfully completed the standard one (1) year probationary period with a Civil Service Commission; no disciplinary actions pending; not serving a reckoning period on a previous disciplinary action.
· Minimum education of High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
· Possess a valid state driver's license or be able to obtain one by the time of hire.
· Must be registered to vote in the county of residence.
· Be of high moral character with no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories and of temperate and industrious habits.
· Must be a U.S. Citizen
· Must be able to read and write the English Language
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, cell phone, and personal computer.
