Job Description

In support of the above mission, performs routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. Takes temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; and helps patients get on and off exam tables, escorts patients about the practice, keeps exam rooms are neat and well-stocked, sets up equipment, and assists with some procedures. Observes patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reports same to the provider or head nurse. Assist with maintaining the office lab, handling and processing lab specimens, drawing blood, and assisting the providers as they provide all aspects of primary patient care.

Typical Physical Demands: This position requires the following physical demands: Sitting, standing, and walking for long periods of time, also stooping, bending, and stretching for files and supplies. Occasionally must lift cartons weighing up to 30 pounds and assist patients of all ages onto and off of exam tables; Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, telephone set, syringes and other sharps, and office lab equipment. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing within normal range to accommodate telephone contacts. Clinical and laboratory positions can be very stressful because it is a multi-tasking environment with considerable direct patient contact.

Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed in a medical practice environment with frequent contact with patients and staff. Interaction with patients and staff is constant and interruptive. Contact involves dealing with well, ill, and handicapped patients and exposure to airborne pathogens. This is an OSHA high risk position because of exposure to blood-borne pathogens mandating the use of universal precautions.

  • Contributes to supporting the mission of STEEMCC by ensuring that quality patient care is provided in each patient contact and during each clinical encounter.

  • Sets-up clinical stations in preparation for patient flow, wipes-down and sanitizes instruments.
  • Makes copies of and properly distributes daily clinical schedule
  • Escorts patients from waiting are, determines chief complaint, takes vital signs, and performs diagnostic tests.
  • Makes medical chart entries of all findings, discusses findings with providers as necessary and warranted.
  • Assists providers in exam rooms with examinations and procedures.
  • Cleans exam rooms and procedure areas after each use and in preparation for next patient.
  • Pulls charts for the next clinical day, files completed charts.
  • Performs reminder calls for next clinical day.
  • Restocks rooms in preparation for next clinical day.
  • Cleans and sanitizes equipment, operates autoclave.
  • Informs Head Nurse of any discrepancies with equipment or repairs required.
  • Assist office laboratory with patient blood draw.
  • Performs blood draws on patients of all ages.
  • Prepares specimens for the reference lab.
  • Handles samples of bodily fluids and tissues utilizing proper procedures.
  • Assist as medical center liaison with reference labs and couriers.
  • Instructs patients on proper collection procedures.
  • Monitors reference lab data base system and checks for missing specimens/results.
  • Assist in processing lab results, notes and addresses “STAT” results, matches results to charts.
  • Performs general medical assistant duties in the clinic.
  • Assists with procedures and educates patients.
  • Assists with data collection regarding lab statistics for clinical reporting.
  • Ensures proper documentation for specimens, i.e. specimens is properly labeled and procedure codes are listed.
  • Ensures each specimen documents are reviewed, and sent properly.
  • Ensures lab is properly inventoried, stored, stock maintained and monthly reports prepared and submitted.
  • Responsible for lab billing review, ensuring charges, patients information, procedure codes charges match itemized billing system; follow up on any discrepancies billed.

29. Other related duties and responsibilities as designated by the Medical Director

Performance Requirements: Skilled in telephonic patient contacts, medical terminology, phlebotomy, charting, computer scheduling and data base access and management, filing, interpersonal contact with providers, other staff, patients, couriers, and reference lab representatives.

Experience: Minimum of 2-5 years in a medical clinical or laboratory environment using a computerized tracking and patient data base system.

Licensure/Certificate: Certification as a Medical Assistant, and Certification in Phlebotomy

Alternative To Minimal Qualifications: Formal educational experience can substitute for the experience on a case-by-case basis.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
