The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

Role description
Under general supervision, administers various types of anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during operations, deliveries and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures; observes anesthetized patients for adverse reactions and takes remedial action; maintains records of anesthesia administered and condition of patient prior to and throughout anesthesia; and performs related duties as required.
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) requires responsibility for: carrying out established methods and procedures in administering anesthetics; achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through efficient handling of equipment, materials and supplies; making responsible contacts with physicians, surgeons and nursing staff on specialized matters; preparing detailed medical and technical records relative to anesthetics administered and patients reactions. Nature of work involves sustained physical effort and manual dexterity with some exposure to health and accident hazards and disagreeable elements.
Essential Duties
Administers various types of anesthetics by inhalation, intravenous injection, epidural, spinal and block methods.
Checks anesthesia machines to assure proper working order; checks resuscitation equipment.
Assembles and maintains sterility of appropriate anesthesia equipment and administers medication to patients under anesthesia.
When patient arrives in surgery: checks patient; evaluates pre-operative condition; makes entries in anesthesia record log; administers various drugs and administers oxygen as necessary for each particular operation; gives blood transfusion when clinically appropriate; monitors patient per American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) standards; discontinues anesthesia at conclusion of operation.
Accompanies patient to recovery room and reports condition to receiving nurse.
Maintains an accurate anesthesia narcotic record.
The 2330 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) performs other related duties as assigned.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications
LICENSE: Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License; AND
CERTIFICATION: Valid Certification as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Selection Procedures
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following.
Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%)
The Evaluation is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to: surgical nursing principles and procedures, including various types and methods of administering anesthesia; standard operating room methods, equipment and procedures; anesthesia equipment, instruments and drugs used in various types of surgery.
Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List.
Eligible List/Score Report
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
