Description and Functions




GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire two (2) Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Check Station Supervisors—one in Evanston and one in Beulah, WY.

The AIS Program is dedicated to protecting Wyoming’s waters by preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species through proactive public outreach, thorough watercraft inspections, and strategic monitoring efforts. These supervisor positions play a critical leadership role in advancing that mission.

In this role, you will oversee the daily operations of a watercraft inspection station, ensuring inspections are conducted accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with state protocols. You will assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising seasonal AIS inspectors, fostering a team culture focused on professionalism, safety, and public service. Additionally, you will compile, review, and summarize inspection data to support program reporting and continuous improvement efforts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
  • Assists with hiring, training, and supervising AIS Inspectors.
  • Coordinates the daily activities, duties, and schedules of inspection stations.
  • Implements the border and watercraft inspection and decontamination program.
  • Leads decontamination of infested watercraft and coordinates with law enforcement on inspection compliance and watercraft quarantine.
  • Assists with addressing the public regarding questions and concerns about watercraft inspections and/or decontamination.
  • Works with the regional crew, AIS coordinator, and statewide personnel to disseminate outreach messages at watercraft check stations.

Qualifications



PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants who have:

  • Experience supervising or leading staff.
  • Experience working with the public and handling difficult situations professionally.
  • Knowledge of aquatic invasive species or watercraft inspection programs.
  • Experience in collecting and summarizing data.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of AIS life history, identification, and control measures.
  • Knowledge of diverse watercraft and other types of conveyances is sufficient to prescribe proper AIS inspection and decontamination procedures.
  • Knowledge of Wyoming AIS Regulations.
  • Ability to be independent and as part of a team, remote from a regional office, and coordinate when needed.
  • Knowledge of information technologies related to wireless routers, bluetooth printers, tablets, and laptops.
  • Skills in customer service, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
  • Skills in planning and organization to develop inspection station schedules and meet deadlines.
  • Skills in public speaking and communication with watercraft owners, AIS Inspectors, and others.
  • Skills in Word, Excel, and database technologies.
  • Skills in mechanical maintenance of small engines and campers.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Weekend and holiday work will be required.
  • The position will require some statewide travel.

NOTES:
  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Wyoming AIS inspector Training will be provided to successful applicants.
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to the appointment.
  • Successful applicants will be stationed in either Beulah, Evanston, or Keyhole.
  • These are 12-month At-will Contract Positions with 11 months of time, which qualify for employee health insurance after one month of service, with the opportunity to renew annually.
  • Check Station Supervisors are able to flex one month of unpaid leave with their supervisor, typically taken during December and January when workload is light.
