About The Role

We are looking for a Chemist to support our value stream by providing analytical data and ensuring quality and quantity which consists of the Process Lab while supporting special projects when needed. This is a great opportunity to join a global mining company and become part of a team comprising of highly skilled technical professionals dedicated to the continuous improvement of Rio Tinto Kennecott.

Reporting to the Superintendent Laboratories and working in a collaborative community within a diverse team, you will be

  • Conducting routine sample preparation and analyses on various sample matrices, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
  • Preparing quality control samples, including round robin samples, standards, duplicates, and spikes.
  • Participating in Method Development, validations, and certification activities to enhance analytical capabilities.
  • Contributing to the Central Laboratory's quality control and assurance programs through proficiency testing, audits, troubleshooting, and process improvements.
  • Performing classical and instrumental laboratory analyses, utilizing techniques such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, automated titration, XRF, Volumetric Analyzers, UV Vis, Fire Assay, and LECO analyzers.
  • Managing analysis workflows to meet schedule requirements, prioritizing efficiency, and timely delivery.
  • Utilizing laboratory data systems and software, including Word, Excel, Access, and LIMS programs, for accurate documentation and analysis.
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, maintaining neat record keeping, and possessing proficient writing and computer skills.

What You Will Bring

  • College Degree preferably in Chemistry or related fields (e.g., Biology or Physics).
  • Previous laboratory experience along with basic leadership skills and proficiency in analytical chemistry.
  • Strong working knowledge of computers and computer applications.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
  • Competence in operating instrumentation such as ICP, ICP-MS, XRF, LECO, Titration, etc.
  • Understanding of Quality Control Concepts and Tools.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Where you will be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, tellurium, Lead, Selenium, and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
