Job Purpose
The Chief Nursing Officer is responsible of managing the nursing services and administers the nursing program; guides the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure that a high quality of patient care is maintained, sets the standard of nursing care within the KAAUH and ensures compliance with established nursing practices. Participates in the management of KAAUH by forward planning, forecasting and participating in the commissioning of any new services. Provides professional leadership and support for all nursing staff. Facilitates and participates in the continued development and implementation of continuous improvements. Supports the ongoing professional development of staff and provides education on management development.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the twenty four (24) hour operational nursing management of KAAUH.
  • Provides innovative leadership to the nurses within the KAAUH to meet the changing needs of the patient.
  • Advises Hospital CEO on all matters affecting patient services and staff welfare.
  • Oversees the co-ordination of nursing staff planning to assist in ensuring the timely procurement of Nurses.
  • Monitors the efficient use of all material and staff resources.
  • Ensures standards of nursing practice by effective co-ordination and the regular review of nursing services.
  • Ensures the efficient administration and management of the nursing service and develops appropriate control systems; formulates objectives, personnel and organizational structures in collaboration with KAAUH management.
  • Provides counsel and guidance to senior nurse managers and staff nurses with reference to hospital/unit management and patient care issues.
  • Directs the nursing component in the commissioning of any new services.
  • Represents the Division of Nursing on various Committees.
  • Collaborates with the Medical division and Nurse Managers for planning in the Nursing division and with regard to administrative, patient care and policy issues.
  • Collaborates and negotiates with medical and allied health care professionals to provide services that facilitate the delivery of patient care.
  • Promotes research based clinical practice within nursing.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of Quality Improvement activities/programes within nursing.
  • Ensures that the Nursing Service provides appropriate in-service and ongoing education to meet the needs of staff development and the promotion of high standards of patient care.
  • Participates in professional activities to maintain awareness of current trends and issues in nursing and health care administration.
  • Motivates departmental staff by effectively leading, guiding and motivating employees to perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Conducts performance evaluation sessions to review employee work performance.
  • Respects patients and their families to promote a patient-centered care culture.
  • Participates in, and supports, quality improving and patient safety activates as an individual or as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Job Qualifications and Experience

Minimum or Required
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing with Masters
  • Registered Nurse - SCFHS license

12 years

(At least 10 years at managerial level)


Minimum or Required
  • Master Degree in Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse - SCFHS license

10 years

(At least 8 years at managerial level)


Preferred
PhD in Nursing

5 years

(At least 3 years at managerial level)
