North Dakota State Hospital - Jamestown, ND - Chief Nursing Officer/Director of Nursing (CNO) Temporary

Ensure high-quality patient care and drive operational excellence at the North Dakota State Hospital (NDSH) as its Chief Nursing Officer/Director of Nursing (CNO).

In this key executive role, you will provide transformative leadership, vision and direction for all nursing and psychiatric nursing related functions, as well as collaborate with other hospital executives and department heads to drive operational excellence in patient outcomes.

NDSH is building a new facility, which provides the opportunity to expand services and people served. As the CNO, your focus will be on the following key responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the nursing department is playing an active role in and contributing to the interdisciplinary team model in patient care
  • Overseeing the nursing budget management, nursing department staffing, and resource allocation
  • Leading transformative initiatives to improve patient satisfaction, safety, and quality metrics
  • Recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and retaining nursing talent to maintain a high-performing nurse team and culture
  • Ensuring nursing care is delivered in accordance with North Dakota and federal regulations, hospital policies and Joint Commission accreditation standards
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with nursing organizations, licensing boards, government agencies, educational institutions and the community at large

To succeed in this position, you must have high emotional intelligence, problem-solving ability and resilience in a high-pressure, significantly changing environment. You're a skilled psychiatric nurse who can model how to participate in interdisciplinary formulation of individual treatment plans and how to give skilled nursing care and therapy. You have extensive knowledge of psychiatric nursing principles, practices and procedures, as well as a strong understanding of regulatory requirements and Joint Commission standards related to behavioral healthcare.

To be considered for this position, you must have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a master's degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing required
  • a current, unrestricted North Dakota RN license, and/or multistate RN compact license in good standing
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive senior nursing leadership experience, in a psychiatric hospital setting
  • Experience with formulating and operating within a multimillion-dollar budget
  • Demonstrated experience leading large nursing teams (100+) in a complex psychiatric setting and driving clinical excellence
  • Successful experience leading teams, nursing care and culture through expansion and transformation

Location and Hours: This position is a full-time, executive-level role with a standard 40-hour workweek and added hours as needed. The position is located onsite at the ND State Hospital in Jamestown, North Dakota.

About ND State Hospital: The North Dakota State Hospital provides psychiatric, and substance use disorder treatment services to North Dakotans who require inpatient or specialized residential care. Programs and services are delivered by a wide variety of clinical and support staff. Clinical disciplines include psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work, addiction counseling, chaplaincy, education, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation, and vocational rehabilitation. The North Dakota State Hospital will be building a new 140-bed, state of the art facility in 2025.
