Brooklyn Aids Task Force was the very first HIV/AIDS organization in Brooklyn prioritizing serving persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) since 1986. Today, BAC provides mental health and substance use-related social services, comprehensive HIV/AIDS care, and coordinated health care and supportive services to under-served racial and ethnic minority communities in the Brooklyn and other parts of New York City.

JOB SUMMARY: The Child Development Specialist supports young adults and their families by assessing developmental needs, creating individualized care and development plans, and delivering targeted interventions that promote emotional, behavioral, and cognitive growth. The Child Development Specialist provides developmentally appropriate home-based and community child development services while collaborating closely with families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure a holistic, trauma-informed approach to care. The Child Development Specialist also coordinates parent/family involvement through Parent Provider conference workshops and activities, and provides guidance, referrals, and support services to strengthen family engagement and improve outcomes for the client.

EDUCATION AND WORK QUALIFIATIONS:

  • MINIMUM: Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Human Development or related field required
  • MINIMUM: Two (2) years of experience working with young adult families in a supportive and empowering environment preferred.
  • Ability to travel within Brooklyn by public transit.
  • Up to 75% of traveling required.

DUTIES AND RESPONBILITES:

Case Management & Family Support

  • Manage a caseload of families and conduct regular home visits.
  • Develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with families and children.
  • Work closely with families on specific issues and challenges they are experiencing.
  • Provide families with appropriate referrals and follow up with families and service providers.
  • Participate in internal and external case conferences.

Individualized Planning & Service Delivery

  • Be part of a team in assessing family needs and child developmental status.
  • Develop and implement individualized family and child plans addressing specific needs.
  • Provide appropriate services to families and children based on these individualized plans.
  • Develop and implement individualized plans for children’s development based on their unique needs.

Child Development & Direct Support

  • Provide direct support and assistance to children in various settings, including home and community environments.
  • Support children with developmental disabilities and autism through tailored activities that promote growth.
  • Conduct assessments and collect data to monitor progress and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to engage children and facilitate their learning.

Parent Engagement & Workshops

  • Coordinate parent/family involvement in Parent Provider conferences, workshops, and activities.
  • Provide workshops to families and staff.
  • Assist in developing the Parent Council and other parent support groups.

Program Support & Documentation

  • Take on program-wide responsibilities such as annual events or parent/child groups.
  • Maintain proper documentation on families and children.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor to fulfill job responsibilities

Other:

  • Other duties as assigned are based on program needs.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience in childcare or child development, particularly with children who have developmental disabilities or autism.
  • Strong communication skills for effective interaction with children, families, and team members.
  • Ability to collect data and assess developmental progress accurately.
  • Background in social work or related fields is beneficial.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $26.68 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
