Child Support Specialist Trainee (Caseworker)

Nature of Work - This posting is for a Caseworker

In a training capacity, performs entry-level Child Support Enforcement work. Through a combination of formal classroom instruction and on-the-job training, assignments are designed to build familiarity with the laws, regulations, policies, programs, and services of the Bureau for Child Support Enforcement (BCSE).

During the training period, employees perform basic child support casework tasks such as processing cases, developing case information, locating parties, and issuing initial notices to non-custodial parents regarding obligations and BCSE involvement. Under close supervision, the employee will begin acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to independently manage a child support caseload.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learning to locate parents, identify assets and income sources, and apply the Child Support formula.
  • Gaining familiarity with agency policy, as well as State and Federal laws.
  • Researching legal sources such as statutes, court opinions, rules, and regulations.
  • Compiling case information through review of public documents, interviews, inter-agency coordination, and case file analysis for use by BCSE attorneys.
  • Responding to customer service inquiries, resolving less complex case issues, and composing routine correspondence.

Confidentiality of information must be maintained at all times. Performance is monitored through monthly evaluations and supervisory oversight.

This Position is located in Cabell County.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: High school diploma or equivalent.
AND
Experience: Four (4) years of clerical and/or paraprofessional experience.
OR
Substitution: Successful completion of study from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience at a rate of one (1) year of experience for thirty (30) credit hours of education.

Special Requirement: Availability of a vehicle for continuous use may be a requisite of employment.

Other Information

Probationary period of twelve (12) months - (SPB 3013)
To allow clerical/customer service, and corrections/community corrections experience to substitute for required training or experience.
