Citizenship Program Specialist VISTA

Canopy NWA is seeking a motivated Citizenship Program Development VISTA to help empower refugees in Northwest Arkansas by developing a new, structured citizenship preparation program that integrates English language learning (ELL), volunteer engagement, and community partnerships. This role focuses on building sustainable systems that strengthen access to naturalization services and support long-term economic stability. Many clients face barriers to citizenship due to limited English proficiency, lack of structured preparation opportunities, and complex application processes. This VISTA will lead foundational program development efforts, including conducting needs assessments, researching best practices, collaborating with certified instructors and partner organizations, and helping design program models that connect English learning with citizenship readiness. The member will also support the development and adaptation of instructional materials, learning activities, and participant monitoring tools to ensure program quality and continuous improvement. In addition, the VISTA will help build volunteer systems and partnerships that expand instructional capacity and strengthen long-term sustainability. This position is part of a multi-VISTA cohort working across different programs at Canopy NWA, providing opportunities for peer collaboration, shared learning, and professional development. The role is ideal for individuals interested in education, program development, community engagement, and anti-poverty work who want meaningful, hands-on nonprofit experience while making a lasting community impact.


Member Duties : The VISTA member will support and strengthen Canopy NWA’s Citizenship Program by refining tools, systems, and partnerships that promote sustainable citizenship education and ESL programming. Duties include contributing to community needs assessments, including limited updates to existing tools and assisting with data collection and analysis as needed, and documenting findings to guide program development. The member will research best practices in citizenship-focused ESL instruction and help organize, standardize, and document instructional materials and learning resources. They will assist in refining systems for monitoring learner progress, including templates, tracking tools, and procedures. The member will also support volunteer management systems and maintain community partnerships to enhance program planning, evaluation, and sustainability.
