Civil Equipment Operator

Purpose: The Civil Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy construction equipment to excavate, grade, trench, backfill, and move materials in support of industrial and civil construction activities. This role ensures efficient equipment operation while maintaining strict adherence to safety regulations, operational procedures, and site requirements.

Essential Skills:

· Operates heavy equipment such as skid steers, excavators, loaders, forklifts, rollers, and motor graders.

· Performs excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, and site preparation activities.

· Uses buckets, forks, blades, and other attachments to move materials and equipment.

· Reads and interprets engineering drawings, grade stakes, and site layouts.

· Inspects equipment prior to operation and performs minor adjustments and routine maintenance.

· Uses proper hand signals and communicates effectively with spotters and supervisors.

· Judge distances, slopes, and clearances accurately to ensure safe operation.

· Maintains safe clearances around overhead lines, underground utilities, and structures.

· Complies with all applicable federal, state, and company safety laws, guidelines, and best practices.

· Maintains logs and records of equipment inspections and operation activities.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

· Minimum three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment in an industrial or civil construction setting.

· TWIC Card (for most sites).

· Ability to identify hand signals, load limits, safety regulations, and operating procedures.

· Forklift certification and/or other equipment certifications as required by OSHA, state, or federal regulations.

· Good verbal and written communication skills to understand instructions and applicable safety regulations.

· Ability to troubleshoot minor mechanical problems.

· Valid Driver's License and clean driving record.

Physical Requirements

· Stand or walk for long periods of time

· Will talk and hear to communicate.

· Use arms and hands to signal, reach for, handle or manipulate objects, materials, and tools.

· Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.

· Must be able to work in all weather conditions (including heat, rain, cold and wind) while wearing appropriate PPE.

· Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs.

· See well (naturally or with correction)

· Eye-hand coordination

· Good physical fitness

· Good sense of balance

· Work at heights

Tool Requirements: Employees are required to utilize their own tools. A detailed tool list will be provided during processing.

Environment: Working conditions encountered in this job include those found in a typical outdoor construction setting, which includes exposure to outside weather conditions, extreme heat, wetness and humidity, elevated noise levels above 89 decibels, and work in cramped quarters. Employees may work at elevated heights, climb stairs and ladders, and perform physical manipulation of tools and heavy equipment. This job demands the use of standard construction personal protective equipment as well as advanced protective equipment, including hearing protection, as needed.
