- Develop and design structural systems and components for metal fabrication projects (e.g., stair balustrades, frames, secondary steel).
- Perform structural analysis and load calculations to ensure safety, stability, and compliance with codes/standards.
- Select appropriate materials, sections, and connection types.
- Use design and analysis software like STAAD Pro, ETABS, AutoCAD, Tekla or similar tools.
2. Preparation of Engineering Documentation
- Prepare and review detailed drawings, Bill of Quantities (BOQ), technical specifications, and calculation packages.
- Review and approve shop drawings from draftsmen and fabrication teams.
- Produce reports and technical documentation for internal use or client submission.
3. Liaison & Coordination
- Coordinate with project managers, draftsmen, fabricators, and site teams to ensure engineering intent is clearly communicated and executed.
- Work with consultants, contractors, and suppliers on design clarifications and approvals.
- Support procurement by verifying technical submittals (e.g., materials, fabrication details).
4. Site Support & Inspection
- Conduct site visits/inspections to monitor fabrication, assembly, and installation quality.
- Ensure structural works comply with design, specifications, and safety requirements.
- Provide technical support during onsite challenges or modifications.
5. Quality, Safety, and Compliance
- Ensure all engineered components and processes comply with relevant codes, standards, and safety regulations.
- Liaise with quality control teams to verify materials and fabrication quality.
- Review risk assessments and method statements related to structural activities.
6. Project Management Support
- Assist in planning project timelines and deliverables where engineering input is needed.
- Track progress of engineering deliverables and help resolve delays.
- Support cost estimation and engineering changes for fabrication tasks.
Skills & Qualifications (Typical)
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred for more advanced roles).
- Proficiency with structural design software and drafting tools.
- Strong knowledge of steel and metal behaviour, load-bearing principles, and structural standards.
- Good communication, coordination, and technical documentation skills.
- Experience in fabrication environments (steel/metal) or construction sectors is a plus.
Role Variants in a Metal Fabrication Firm
Depending on the company’s size and needs, the civil/structural engineer role might overlap with or support:
- Project or Fabrication Engineer (focus on managing technical delivery from design through production)
- Structural Checker (ensuring designs meet codes and fabrication capabilities)
- Site Engineering Support (onsite technical supervision during installation)
- Design Reviewer (cross-checking shop drawings and engineering submittals)
