The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Civilian Traffic Investigator to perform a variety of duties pertaining to the investigation of minor motor vehicle collisions, including writing accident reports, controlling traffic flow, directing traffic and providing crowd control; to perform various administrative support duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Investigate traffic accidents; initiate proper assistance, including wreckers, ambulances, fire department personnel, and law enforcement.
  • Assist disabled motorists and aid in the removal of abandoned vehicles that obstruct roadways.
  • Provide traffic direction and control at traffic accident scenes, road closures, inoperative or damaged traffic control devices and other situations that necessitate manual traffic direction.
  • Respond to dispatched assignments.
  • Report the location and nature of crimes in progress to the communications center without becoming personally involved.
  • Move and set up traffic cones, barricades and flares for distances of up to 100 feet to control crowds and traffic at hazard and/or collision scenes.
  • Enter and retrieve data on a computer to locate information on wanted subjects and to check license plate or driver's license information.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment and supplies, ensuring availability and proper working order.
  • May testify as a witness in court.
  • Perform various administrative support duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
Two years experience requiring recordkeeping, public contact, interpretation of rules and regulations and investigation, preferably for a law enforcement agency.

Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:

Required:
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability. Eligible for Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) certification.

Preferred:
CPR certification; First Responder certification.

Per North Carolina Administrative Code – "A conviction of a crime or unlawful act defined as a Class B misdemeanor renders an applicant or certified DCIN user ineligible to become certified as a DCIN user when such conviction is within 10 years of the application date of request for DCIN certification. A conviction of a felony or two or more Class B misdemeanors regardless of the date of conviction renders an applicant or certified DCIN user permanently ineligible to hold such certification."

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is subject to pre-employment polygraph and/or CVSA testing.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • SBI/Fingerprinting Criminal History Record Check Requirement: To comply with Sessions Law 2025-16, applicants offered a position with the City may be subject to a criminal history record check of State and National Repositories of Criminal Histories conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26. The City may consider the results of these criminal history record checks in its hiring decisions.

From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4 - 6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen, background investigation and a driving history check and a polygraph/CVSA examination to be conducted by the Police Department.
