Summary: The position of a Civil/Structural Designer I supports the engineering staff through basic drafting and design principles by the collection and analysis of data obtained from the field, from project information for the benefit of our clients using modern drafting & BIM practices. This person would be expected to fulfill the requirements of the position and understand that occasional travel to client’s facilities is required, both locally and out of state, which could include such things as client meetings and/or obtaining data from field observations and measurements.


For entry-level candidates, we are open to this starting off as either part-time or full-time, with the plan to increase to full-time, long-term employment. This is not an internship.

  • Must be located in the United States and be legally authorized to work in the country.
  • Authorize a background check including verification of past employment, criminal history, and their educational history.
  • Be able to submit to a drug test upon offer of position.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Understand modern computer software: MS Office, AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, Navisworks, etc.
  • Have the willingness to learn how to use field equipment & their practices which include the utilization of GPS surveying & laser scanning equipment.
  • Be able to physically maneuver through a client facility that may include tight, but not confined, spaces.
  • Be able to commute to the office location.
  • Must have reliable, consistent, and punctual work-site attendance.

Desired Education/Experience:

  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in the drafting of civil/structural projects.
  • A vocational or an associate’s degree in Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD), or the equivalent experience.
  • Basic knowledge of the design and layout of structure foundations, steel framing, concrete/wood/light gage metal/masonry framed structures.
  • Ability to develop standard design layouts that consider and incorporate requirements from other engineering disciplines to create a coordinated, unified design.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within civil/structural field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform daily functions.
  • Prepares design layouts in compliance with engineering design and applicable code requirements that consider constructability, completeness and presentation.
  • Optional experience: basic surveying for determination of project elevations and control points using level and/or total station equipment; familiarity with Autodesk Civil 3D or willingness to learn; developing site layouts, grading, underground utility layouts.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to plan ahead and conceptualize; capable of recognizing discrepancies with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain data from field observations or existing documents.
  • Interface with other departments/engineering disciplines as required in order to effectively and efficiently complete projects.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain compliance with all Chemstress policies, procedures and standards.
Location: On-site at 39 S Main St. Akron, OH (potential for hybrid schedule once trained)
