Claims Settlement Agent

Nassau County Office of the Treasurer is seeking applicants for the position of

Claims Settlement Agent.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Settles or makes reimbursements of taxes in accordance with established tax laws, regulations, and ordinances, and maintains specialized records; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

Under direct supervision, the position requires the use of routine judgment, and the work is reviewed for accuracy and completeness.

TYPICAL DUTIES

1. Determines through investigation proper refund payment to taxpayer and prepares necessary papers for processing.

2. Reviews resolutions, assessment rolls, County Clerk records and other legal documents to determine appropriate tax settlement.

3. Reviews court orders or other legal documents affecting reduction in assessment valuations.

4. Computes new corrected tax extensions and refunded interest.

5. Makes necessary adjustments from approved resolutions on tax evaluation.

6. Maintains records related to taxes, cash received and disbursed, and challenges to taxes (certiorari).

7. Maintains specialized accounts and records, such as bail and certificates of residency.

8. Operates standard office equipment requiring no previous training.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and arithmetic.

2. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

3. Ability to make tax computations, tax searches and process refunds.

4. Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions in evaluating tax refunds.

5. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in oral or written form.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school

and

Two years of general business experience, which involved working with financial accounts and records.

Starting Salary: $46,853
