Clinical Content & Terminology Senior Associate

Position Summary:
Join the Chief Medical Officer Organization team to research, develop, and maintain clinical content and terminology libraries that support global clinical documentation needs. In this role, you will create clinical content assets for multiple medical specialties, apply and validate standardized code mappings, and partner with internal teams to ensure content is accurate, consistent, and ready for product updates. You will use data and evidence-based guidelines to support clinical decision support and related workflows. This position is hybrid in Belfast, ME, and reports to the Clinical Content Director

About the Team:
The Clinical Content & Terminology team improves the customer experience by curating clinically relevant, evidence-informed content supported by widely used medical code sets. We standardize and continuously improve clinical content libraries to support consistent documentation and care delivery across athenahealth workflows. The team partners with product, technical writing, clinical operations, and external content vendors to deliver content updates for new workflows and features. Our work supports clinical documentation, screening and care management workflows, and related clinical recommendations.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop clinical content assets for multiple medical specialties, including screening questionnaires, documentation templates, treatment plans, and order libraries

  • Research clinical care practices within medical specialties to determine documentation and workflow needs

  • Apply standardized code mappings by researching and validating codes from libraries such as SNOMED, LOINC, CPT, and ICD-10

  • Support the creation and improvement of best-practice content using evidence-based clinical practice guidelines

  • Partner with outside clinical content vendors to support content development and updates

  • Collaborate with technical writing teams to support Knowledge Articles and Release Notes for new or updated content releases

  • Analyze usage and content performance data to inform project decisions and future content priorities

  • Run database queries to support the generation of value sets used in clinical recommendations and clinical decision support algorithms

  • Support data exchange work by analyzing and mapping data exchange elements and code-related requirements

  • Use AI tools to accelerate content research and summarization, validate outputs against clinical sources and internal requirements, and improve content development productivity and quality


Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with training on clinical content development for internal teams and external stakeholders

  • Support analysis of clinical care guidelines and the development of specialty-specific workflows

  • Contribute to quality and performance improvement efforts for code mapping and clinical content delivery

  • Help content managers and leaders with related content team initiatives and cross-functional work

  • Participate in ongoing review and refinement of content library standards and processes


Expected Education & Experience:

  • Experience with athenaOne Clinicals (preferred experience includes time working with admin configuration tables)

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to research specialty-specific clinical care practices

  • Ability to use standardized medical code sets and support mapping activities (e.g., SNOMED, LOINC, CPT, ICD-10)

  • Strong computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Experience with Airtable, SQL, and/or HTML (preferred or plus)

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred)

  • Professional healthcare industry experience (preferred)

  • 2+ years of athenaClinicals experience OR 3+ years of clinical practice/medical terminology experience (both preferred)


Expected Compensation

$65,000 - $111,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
