This recruitment offers a $3,000 recruitment incentive for eligible new employees joining the UW Medicine team.

Who we’re looking for:

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 2 with the Specimen Procurement Team at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake.

As a member of the Specimen Procurement Team, the CLT 2 is responsible for coordinating workflow of the preanalytical and technical activities for DLMP’s send-out testing to referral labs and handling problem resolution. In addition to all CLT 1 duties, which include, but are not limited to, the initial handling of patient specimens and understanding proper collection and handling requirements, the CLT 2 serves as a primary technician for send-out activities. This role also has extensive internal and external communication to relay information and resolve issues, including troubleshooting problem specimens and processing instructions for undefined tests. The CLT 2 is expected to establish collaborative relationships with the Clinical Administrative Support Team (CAST) and Lab Medicine Resident teams to ensure appropriate processing, shipping, and billing of undefined send-out tests.

What you’ll contribute:

  • Prepare packages and ensure that send-out samples are forwarded to the appropriate reference lab for requested testing.
  • Use resources to provide instruction on the collection and processing of specialized and targeted tests that are not performed by DLMP but must be sent to outside laboratories. These can be low volume tests or highly specialized and rare tests. This includes communicating specific collection instructions to the patient as needed.
  • Maintain higher than average awareness of the chemicals and agents needed to preserve certain tests. These chemicals may include Acetic Acid, 6N HCL, 6N HNO, Boric Acid, and others. CLT2 is responsible for aiding other staff in the preparation of these collection containers as necessary.
  • Maintain adequate stock of special collection materials needed for referral testing, including, but not limited to, un-expired stock of chemicals, agents and special collection kits needed for the preservation of send-out tests from SCCA, UWMC and Roosevelt labs. These supplies include, but are not limited to, Serotonin tubes, trace metal tubes, Somatostatin kits, TRH preservative tubes, Z-Tubes for Neurotensin, and Cambridge GI tubes for Neurokinin and Pancreatin. Kits include Viracor, Osford, and Prometheus and any others as needed.
  • Build and maintain a working relationship with the referral laboratories as needed to facilitate the send-out process. In addition to the Mayo Clinic, the primary reference lab that is utilized by DLMP, the CLT2 is responsible for sending specimens to all reference laboratories as needed and approved by the Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR).
  • Maintain files, reports, and results in an organized and accessible manner.
  • Perform continual monitoring of lab reports and pending log monitors (PLM) to verify consistency of service and troubleshoot issues.
  • Maintain required annual certifications needed for the shipment of hazardous materials and dry ice.
  • Train and support new and existing staff on the performance of reference laboratory send out activities and problem resolution.
  • Respond promptly, courteously, and professionally to phone and written inquiries about test information, results, and other related information.
  • Solve problems referred to by the CLT 1 group, providers and other divisions in an efficient, timely, thorough, and accurate manner. Include the appropriate documentation in hc1.
  • Solve problems to expedite processing of specimens that are mislabeled, unlabeled, missing patient data, insufficient quantity, etc. and contact ordering locations as required, thereby ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of these procedures that are critical to patient care.
  • Provide constructive and valuable suggestions for improvement. Responsible for helping the general SPS staff maintain some awareness of the send-out process and continuously update procedures.
  • Serve as a resource to general SPS staff with respect to the Lab Information System (LIS) and Clinical Information System (CIS).
  • Demonstrate an ability to be flexible, organized, work as a team member to provide maximum coverage and quality service in all stressful situations.
  • Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork within SPS and working relationships between SPS and other lab divisions. Including maintaining communication with the following groups to facilitate the collection, ordering, shipment, billing and resulting of referral send-out testing: Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR), SPS Staff, Phlebotomy staff, providers, Clinical Administrative Support Team (CAST).
  • Perform the duties of the CLT 1 as needed and assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required or as assigned by supervisor or manager.

What you’ll need:

  • High school graduation or equivalent AND two (2) years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Department requirements :

  • Completion of a phlebotomy course.
  • Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification with the Washington State Department of Health OR obtain the MA-P certification within 60 days of start date.

Desired qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in science
  • Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHRs) information systems
  • Experience with laboratory information system (LIS)
