Position Summary
The Clinical Nurse in the Cath Lab/Interventional Radiology provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac and radiological procedures. The role involves patient assessment, preparation, procedural assistance, monitoring, and post-procedure recovery, ensuring safe and high-quality patient care within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Key Responsibilities
A. Pre-Procedure Responsibilities

Conducts comprehensive patient assessments, including history, allergies, medications, and lab results.

Prepares patients physically and emotionally for cardiac or IR procedures.

Ensures informed consent is obtained and documented.
-
Establishes IV access and prepares medications, sedation, and equipment.

Provides patient and family education regarding the procedure and post-procedure care.
B. Intra-Procedure Responsibilities

Assists cardiologists and interventional radiologists during procedures such as:

Coronary angiography and angioplasty

Cardiac catheterizations
-
Pacemaker/ICD insertions
-
Vascular interventions
-
Biopsies, drain insertions, embolization, PICC lines
-
Monitors patient hemodynamics and sedation levels.

Administers medications, including analgesics and sedatives, per protocol.

Maintains sterile technique and supports equipment setup and troubleshooting.
-
Documents procedural details accurately and promptly.
C. Post-Procedure Responsibilities

Monitors patient recovery, including access site care, bleeding checks, and vital signs.

Identifies and manages complications such as arrhythmias, bleeding, contrast reactions, or pain.

Provides discharge teaching to patients and families.

Ensures safe transfer to appropriate units following recovery criteria.
D. Patient Safety & Compliance

Adheres to radiation safety protocols for staff and patients.

Complies with infection prevention and control guidelines.

Ensures all documentation follows regulatory and hospital standards.

Maintains readiness of emergency equipment and participates in code responses when required.
E. Collaboration & Professional Development

Works closely with cardiologists, radiologists, technologists, anesthesiologists, and other nurses.

Participates in case discussions, quality initiatives, and departmental meetings.

Engages in ongoing education and skills development relevant to Cath Lab/IR practice.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
-
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.

Current Registered Nurse license.
-
BLS and ACLS certifications required.
Experience

Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing experience in Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology,
