The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) practices within the UPHS professional practice model and exhibits UPHS core values, which reflect its mission. Based on a specialized knowledge base, the CNE designs, implements and evaluates standards of practice that improve the delivery of high quality, comprehensive care to individuals, families and population. The CNE is a clinical leadership position that includes the traditional components of patient care, consultation, research utilization and education with the aims of upholding practice standards, contributing to the professional development of others and shaping/influencing nursing practice within the organization. The CNE actively supports organizational goals. Specifically, the CNE facilitates the implementation of organizational initiatives that integrate evidence/research, professional/regulatory standards, and demonstrates system savvy. The CNE is self-directed and purposeful in maintaining current professional knowledge and competence within specialty area. The domains of evidence-based practice and research, safety, professionalism, person and family centered care, leadership, informatics/technology, teamwork and continuous quality improvement frame the work of the CNE.

Coordinates the orientation program for all Maternity staff.

  • Participates in projects to support education needs and serves on committees at unit, division, and organization level as assigned.
  • Collaborates/coordinates with the CCH Professional Development instructors and other Professional Development Specialists within UPHS to support education programs as appropriate.
  • Assesses learning needs and develops programs/courses based on observation, written feedback, and communication with Clinical Manager, Director, staff, and hospital personnel.
  • Develops materials that are original and do not violate copyright and are cost appropriate for the program. Demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality when using case studies, and in the preparation of all education materials.
  • Provides continuing education, in-services, and competency assessments for the staff of the Maternity unit.
  • Selects appropriate speakers, (e.g. physicians, vendors, other professionals) for education programs.
  • Attains PSNA contact hours or equivalent certification for RN programs as appropriate for topic and length of program.
  • Teaches current standards of nursing practice and integrates current CCH policies and procedures into the curriculum; integrates current Joint Commission and other regulating agencies’ standards into curriculum.
  • Provides “real time” unit-based education for clinical needs.
  • Teaches topics such as NRP and performs the lead instructor role for these courses.
  • Promotes staff growth and development by consulting on clinical, education and professional issues.
  • Plans and supports documentation of staff orientation and competency verification program (classroom, clinical, unit specific) appropriate for the Maternity staff.
  • Maintains ongoing support and communicates with the orientee, preceptors, Clinical Manager, and Director to evaluate progress and learning needs of the new employee.
  • Provides the appropriate intervention for orientee and preceptor performance problems. Considers alternate methods to support learning needs.
  • Provides growth and development opportunities for preceptors through the Preceptor Workshop and individual unit-based consultations.
  • Attends and facilitates assigned committee meetings and participates in committee projects. Serves as chairperson when appropriate.

Education/Experience

Required Master of Science in Nursing and 5+ years Recent clinical experience in the maternal-newborn setting as an RN preferred.

Experience in a nursing educator role preferred.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

Current Registered Nurse (RN) Pennsylvania License

NRP Certification required

NRP Instructor Certification, or attain within 12 months of hire in Maternal-Newborn Nursing, or attain within 12 months of hire
