Mass General Brigham relies on a wide range of professionals, including doctors, nurses, business people, tech experts, researchers, and systems analysts to advance our mission. As a not-for-profit, we support patient care, research, teaching, and community service, striving to provide exceptional care. We believe that high-performing teams drive groundbreaking medical discoveries and invite all applicants to join us and experience what it means to be part of Mass General Brigham.
We seek an organized, highly motivated, full-time Clinical Research Coordinator I (CRC) to join our neurogenetics program within the Movement Disorders division, in the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. The neurogenetics program is an innovative effort to support diagnosis, gene discovery and access to precision-led therapies for adults and children with movement disorders. The Division of Movement Disorders at Mass General Brigham provides specialty care for pediatric and adult patients with a wide variety of conditions, including dystonia, chorea, myoclonus, Parkinson’s Disease and parkinsonian disorders, tremor, myoclonus, tics, spasticity and mixed movement disorders.
In the neurogenetics program, we are focused on the following initiatives: (1) Genetic analysis of of adults and children with suspected or confirmed genetic conditions targeting diagnosis and gene discovery; (2) Disease-specific studies of pediatric-onset neurogenetic conditions focusing on natural history and/or collaboration with translational scientists; (3) Clinical trials for rare genetically-determined movement disorders.
Participants enrolled in one of our program protocols may have their genetic sequencing data analyzed by our team, and/or may be asked to provide medical and family history information, participate in neurological examination(s) and donate tissue samples to be used in wide-ranging research applications. Our core team includes 2 Neurologists (PI : Claudio M. de Gusmao, M.D., Ph.D.) and one Genetic Counselor, in addition to different intra-mural and extra-mural collaborators focusing on early-onset, genetically determined movement disorders.
The CRC’s primary responsibility is to independently recruit and enroll participants with movement disorders of presumed or confirmed genetic etiology, as well as their family members. The research visits may entail completion of the informed consent process, collection of the medical history and pedigree creation. In select cases, the CRC may additionally be asked to perform a standardized videotaped exam, administer structured neurological motor examinations and collect tissue samples (saliva swab and/or phlebotomy). These visits may take place at Mass General and Brigham and Women’s hospitals or remotely and, occasionally, at participant home visits.
In addition to working directly with participants and their family members during research visits, the CRC identifies needs and communicates with research study staff, clinician-researchers, and research scientists. The CRC is responsible for input of research data, management of biological samples, and support of other research project operations as needed.
This is an excellent foundation for someone interested in pursuing graduate school in medicine, public health, or clinical research. There are ample opportunities to observe patient care and enhance understanding of genetic research. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, mature, and responsible with excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills. You must be able to work independently in a dynamic environment, organize and prioritize multiple tasks, and seek assistance when appropriate. Successful applicants will plan to work for no less than 24 months.
