Position Summary:
The Clinical Specialist (LCSW) serves as the lead clinician for the Mental Health Diversion (MHD) Program for Cape May and Atlantic Counties. This position provides comprehensive evaluations, treatment recommendations, case coordination, and clinical oversight for individuals diverted from incarceration due to diagnosed serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) and/or co-occurring disorders. The clinician conducts psychosocial and diagnostic assessments, develops individualized treatment plans, and coordinates services between the courts, prosecutors, defense counsel, probation, and community providers. The role ensures continuity of care, supports successful community reentry, and monitors participant compliance with treatment and court requirements in alignment with the scope of services.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervisory Responsibilities to include:

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for Clinicians.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one supervision sessions and team meetings to review performance, discuss challenges, and set goals.
  • Monitor staff compliance with agency and program requirements, including maintaining face-to-face client hours, completing timely documentation, and ensuring updated charts and assessments.
  • Train new staff on program standards, agency policies, and professional best practices.
  • Address performance concerns promptly, implementing corrective actions as needed in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Participates in on-call duties.

Clinical Assessment & Service Coordination

  • Conduct clinical eligibility evaluations for Mental Health Diversion candidates in accordance with contact guidelines.
  • Utilize current diagnostic criteria to assess SPMI, co-occurring, and substance use disorders.
  • Utilize evidence-based approaches, including Motivational Interviewing, Positive Behavioral Supports, and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Develop written evaluations and treatment recommendations for submission to the courts.
  • Create individualized treatment plans and provide wraparound services.

Collaboration & Court Involvement

  • Participate in court staffing sessions, diversion hearings, and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Provide clinical input and expert recommendations regarding participant eligibility, progress, and level of care.
  • Serve as liaison between JFS, the courts, and community

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Active LCSW license in good standing
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of post-graduate clinical experience in mental health or justice-involved settings.
  • Experience conducting diagnostic assessments, substance use screening, and providing evidence-based interventions such as CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care.
  • Familiarity with criminal justice and diversionary programs preferred.
