Shawnee Health is seeking a CMA or LPN to add to the Carbondale OB/GYN team. This position reports directly to the Nurse Manager.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Duties
  • Greets the patient, escorts the patient to the exam room, and verifies patient name and date of birth.
  • Obtains vital signs, height and weight, allergies, completes medication reconciliation, last menstrual period, medication reconciliation, updates, social, past, surgical and family health history
  • Updates immunizations and documents relevant information by following appropriate EHR work flow for the visit type and alerts provider to any concerns.
  • Reviews patient social, family and medical health history, documenting any changes in the patient medical record.
  • Updates quality care guidelines.
  • Updates care team in electronic health record
  • Reviews and addresses any outstanding orders
  • Completes all age appropriate screenings per SH standards
  • Prepares patient for exam.
  • Performs and assists provider with any procedures or treatments.
  • Performs point of care lab tests. Correctly processes orders for external lab pick-up, understands how to process, result, and document all labs including confidential
  • Administers medications or immunizations per the provider orders or per standing orders and documents in the patient medical record. Selects appropriate inventory for immunizations per requirements. Will ensure that either additional nursing or provider signs off on sign out logs
  • Responsible to scan all vaccines out prior to administration
  • Complies with all aspects of grant initiatives
  • Assists in completing of paperwork and prepares for provider review
  • Submits necessary documentation for reportable diseases to local health department
  • Maintains all equipment in accordance with manufacturer directions and clinical policies in regard to infection control. Will turn off or plug in equipment at end of day as needed to charge including vitals carts, EKG machines, iPads, cell phones, walkie-talkies
  • If applicable, records temperatures twice daily for vaccine refrigerator and freezer
  • May be assigned sample medication management for site
  • May be assigned autoclaving and sterilization of equipment
  • May be assigned to manage patient notification of PCAP medications and pick-up
  • Records lab temperature and performs daily quality controls of designated work areas and point of care testing as defined by manufacture guidelines
  • Participates in the quality assurance of testing for point-of-care by the American Proficiency Institute
  • Ensures all documentation is complete, timely and accurate following clinic policies and procedures and EHR workflows by end of each business day.
  • Follows sterile technique and aseptic technique as appropriate.
  • Provides education for patient on such topics as tobacco cessation, weight management, physical activity, chronic diseases and other health topics and documents appropriately.
  • Manages electronic inbox and completes tasks in accordance with our policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with patient by telephone to relay advice or instructions from the provider.
  • Maintains all equipment in accordance with manufacturer directions and clinical policies in regard to infection control.
  • Communicate with supervisor and other team members during the work day to meet the needs of the patients.
  • Follows all clinic policies and procedures for medication and immunization administration, sign out, reconciliation and inventory management.
  • Utilizes ICARE (Illinois Comprehensive Automated Immunization Registry Exchange) to maintain an immunization registry for SH patients.
  • Participates in huddles and other meetings as required.
  • Required to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and early morning hours including community outreach and education events
  • Reliable transportation on the job is mandatory
  • May be temporarily assigned or permanently re-assigned to work at other Shawnee Health locations
  • Required to assist with training of new hires, students and Medical Assistant Apprentices
Attendance:
Employee must maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with Shawnee Health policies and procedures. Employee must to report to work and be on time for each scheduled shift unless scheduled absent or on approved leave in accordance with federal and/or state law. Regular employee attendance is essential to the efficient operation of Shawnee Health Service and is an essential component of employee’s job duties.

Employee will promote a culture of continuous improvement by actively participating in team based improvement events that will support SH process improvement goals and initiatives.
Compliance with Policies/Procedures:
Employee will maintain compliance with Shawnee Health policies, procedures, and on-going education requirements. Employee will maintain compliance with program specific standards and regulations.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Health & Safety:
Employee will comply with all standard operation procedures of Shawnee Health regarding employee health and safety, including but not limited to OSHA regulations (Blood borne Pathogen Standard and Hazardous Communication Rules), Environmental Protection Act (EPA) regulations governing waste disposal, and completion of unusual occurrence reports.

  • Licenses & Certifications:
Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license and auto liability insurance on personal vehicles.
BLS/CPR Certification must be maintained. Knowledge of basic first aid is required.
Must have a valid certification to practice as a Certified Medical Assistant or LPN license with the state of Illinois

Employee’s job duties cannot be performed remotely and are required to be performed at SH facilities. No hybrid/remote work arrangements will be considered in accordance with the Telework Policy.
