Job Overview
The CNC Machine Operator – 3D is responsible for operating and setting up CNC machines used for 3D cutting, routing, carving, and profiling of wood and wood-based materials. The role ensures accurate execution of complex 3D components in accordance with approved drawings, CAD/CAM data, samples, and quality standards for joinery, furniture, and interior fit-out works.
Key Responsibilities
1. CNC Machine Operation
- Operate 3-axis / 4-axis / 5-axis CNC routers for 3D machining, carving, and profiling tasks.
- Load and run CNC programs generated from CAD/CAM software.
- Set up machines including tooling, vacuum beds, fixtures, clamps, and zero-point alignment.
- Perform 3D machining for decorative panels, curved components, moldings, furniture parts, patterns, and custom joinery items.
- Monitor machining processes to ensure accuracy, surface quality, and safe operation.
2. Program Interpretation & Setup
- Read and understand CNC programs, tool paths, and setup sheets.
- Verify program parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and tool selection.
- Conduct dry runs and first-piece inspections before full production.
- Make minor program adjustments (offsets, tool changes) within authorized limits.
3. Quality & Accuracy
- Ensure finished components meet dimensional tolerances, 3D geometry, and surface finish requirements.
- Match output to approved samples, mock-ups, and shop drawings.
- Perform self-inspections using measuring tools, templates, and gauges.
- Identify machining defects such as tool marks, chatter, incorrect depths, or dimensional deviations.
- Coordinate inspections with QAQC personnel as required.
4. Materials & Tooling
- Work with materials including MDF, plywood, solid timber, laminated boards, veneered panels, and composite materials.
- Inspect materials for defects, thickness, and suitability before machining.
- Select and install appropriate cutting tools (end mills, ball nose cutters, engraving bits).
- Monitor tool wear and replace cutters as needed to maintain quality.
5. Machine Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform daily machine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance.
- Check spindle condition, vacuum systems, dust extraction, and tool holders.
- Report machine errors, alarms, or mechanical issues to the CNC supervisor or maintenance team.
- Maintain machine and production logs.
6. Health, Safety & Housekeeping
- Follow all health and safety procedures related to CNC machine operation.
- Use appropriate PPE such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust masks.
- Ensure emergency stops, guards, and interlocks are functional.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow environmental and dust control requirements.
