CNC Machinist – Job Description

Position Summary

The CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC machines to produce high‑precision parts according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role ensures parts meet quality standards, maintains equipment, and supports continuous improvement in a manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Setup & Operation

- Set up CNC mills, lathes, or multi‑axis machines according to job specifications.

- Load tools, set tool offsets, establish work coordinates, and verify machine readiness.

- Operate machines safely to produce parts within required tolerances.

Blueprint & Program Interpretation

- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T symbols, and work instructions.

- Understand and edit G‑code or M‑code when required.

- Verify programs and tooling match job requirements.

Quality Control

- Inspect workpieces using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMMs, or other precision tools.

- Document measurements and maintain required production records.

- Identify nonconforming parts and perform corrective actions.

Maintenance & Safety

- Perform routine machine maintenance including cleaning and minor adjustments.

- Follow all safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements.

- Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Production Support

- Monitor machining operations and adjust feeds, speeds, or tooling as needed.

- Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and supervisors to resolve issues.

- Suggest process improvements to enhance efficiency and quality.

Required Skills & Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- 2–5 years of CNC machining experience or accredited program completion.

- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.

- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments.

- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

- Familiarity with CNC controls such as Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or Siemens.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with lathe multi‑axis mill machining (3‑axis/4‑axis).

- Ability to modify or write CNC programs.

- Forklift or crane certification.

- Experience in high‑mix, low‑volume or high‑volume production environments.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to stand for extended periods.

- Lift or move materials up to 50 lbs.

- Manual dexterity and good hand‑eye coordination.
