Job Brief:
The Coating Lab Technician is responsible for receiving, preparing, testing, and recording coating samples to ensure materials and applications meet project specifications and standards. The role requires careful handling of samples, accurate test execution per approved methods, routine equipment checks, and support for quality system activities (ISO 17025). The technician must follow all HSE requirements and maintain good laboratory housekeeping.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, identify, log, and prepare samples; maintain traceability and chain of custody.
- Perform coating tests according to approved methods, standards, and project specifications, including (but not limited to) DFT (SAES-H-201), adhesion, cure/solvent resistance (MEK), holiday detection, cathodic disbondment, hot-water soak, and surface profile/cleanliness checks.
- Accurately record all test data, environmental conditions, and observations in controlled forms or the LIMS. Report any deviations immediately to authorized personnel.
- Support preparation of test reports for review and approval by authorized staff.
- Conduct routine equipment checks, verification, and basic maintenance. Ensure only calibrated/verified equipment is used and calibration status is maintained and controlled.
Required Qualification / Experience / Skills:
Education
- Diploma or degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Coating Technology, Laboratory Technology, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a coatings laboratory, NDT, or materials testing environment (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Experience with common coating test methods and equipment.
- Have sound knowledge of ISO 17025 and uncertainty measurements.
- Basic knowledge of quality management systems.
- Knowledge of statistical methods and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of coating test standards & methods DFT, adhesion, MEK, holiday testing, etc.
- Good investigative and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Problem solving and decision-making capability with a good analytical approach.
- Meteorological skills (where applicable to environmental test conditions).
- Ability to follow written procedures and maintain accurate records.
