As a part of the Revenue Cycle team, Coders are responsible for the accurate coding/charge capture ( ICD 10-CM, ICD 10-PCS, CPT and HCPCS )of all records for Nor Lea Hospital District. The coder will perform review and audit of the medical records to support continual improvement optimize reimbursement. The coding function is a primary source for data and information used in health care today, and promotes provider/patient continuity, and accurate database information. The coding function also ensures compliance with established coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation guidelines. The coder serves as a liaison between the billing department and the clinical staff; utilizing denial trends, claim edits, and provider questions as tools to increase reimbursement and clean claims which in turn will reduce the districts AR days.

  • Abstracts all necessary information and assigns codes (ICD-10, CPT & HCPCS), which most accurately describe each documented diagnosis, surgical procedure and special therapy or procedure according to established guidelines.
  • Serve as a resource and subject matter expert to providers and other medical personnel regarding coding, charges, and regulations.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and completes work queues daily. Addresses edits and determines appropriate actions.
  • Works as liaison for departments and patients to better understand coding/charge capture.
  • Works closely with the Revenue Cycle team and clinical teams to address coding errors and assists in adjusting workflows and provides education to improve reimbursement as well as to educate the clinical teams to eliminate rework.
  • Evaluates current coding capture processes to ensure appropriate capture and revenue reporting in compliance with government and third-party payer requirements, to ensure consistency across the district.
  • Assists customers timely upon request and follows up on previous interactions to ensure issue resolution, escalation, or issue closure as appropriate.

Experience

Two years of coding experience using ICD 10-CM, ICD 10-PCS, CPT and HCPCS or equivalency preferred but not required.

Education

Completion of high school, or equivalent required

Licensure/Certification- Current

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Preferred

Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-Based (CCS-P) Preferred - or

Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Preferred
