Position Summary
The Collections/Programming Assistant supports daily library operations through a blend of technical services, public service, and programming responsibilities. This position works closely with the Director and Assistant Director to maintain and enhance the library’s collection, improve user access, and deliver engaging programs for the community. ________________________________________
Key Responsibilities
Collection Management
- Assist with cataloging library materials, ensuring accurate Machine-Readable Catalog (MARC) records
- Process all new materials, including labeling, barcoding, stamping, and applying protective coverings
- Assign and verify classification labels and Dewey Decimal numbers
- Maintain organization of new materials, including shelving and shifting items as needed
- Run reports and queries related to the library’s collection
- Track collection purchases and maintain records using spreadsheets
- Recommend materials for purchase
- Assist with weeding (de-selection) in accordance with library policy
Programming & Outreach
- Assist in planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating programs for children and adults
- Support the Summer Reading Program from planning through wrap-up
- Help create and distribute marketing materials for programs and services
Website & Digital Content
- Perform regular updates to the library website
- Ensure website content meets ADA accessibility standards
- Create and post event content
Public Service
- Staff the circulation desk as scheduled
- Assist patrons with circulation, reference questions, and basic technology support
- Help process interlibrary loan deliveries and materials from partner libraries
Collaboration & Administrative Support
- Work closely with the Director and Assistant Director on projects and daily operations
- Assist with special projects and ongoing initiatives
- Participate in professional development opportunities, including webinars and regional cataloging meetings
- Cross-train in various library functions
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, developmental needs, and emerging trends.
- Strong programming, public speaking, and storytelling skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate programs and services effectively.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with children, teens, families, and volunteers, and provide outstanding customer service.
- Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm for a small, collaborative library environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency with current technology, including computers, mobile devices, online resources, Canva, social media platforms, website maintenance, and digital literacy tools.
- Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, push and pull book carts, and move library materials as needed.
- Ability to stand, bend, use the hands to write, grasp, and keyboard; talk; hear; sit, stand, walk, bend, twist, reach with hands and arms and reach for extended periods.
- Availability to work some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to drive to off-site outreach events. Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
This position is part of a small, rural public library serving a diverse community in Northern Wisconsin. The ideal candidate will enjoy engaging with families, fostering community partnerships, and contributing creative energy to a supportive and close-knit library team. As a member of this team, the individual must demonstrate flexibility in performing a variety of responsibilities as needed to ensure smooth library operations.
Qualifications
- Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to learn cataloging systems and library software
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., spreadsheets, web tools)
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Benefits:
- Seven holidays paid based on typical number of hours worked in a day.
- Personal Time Off with be prorated by the numbers of hours typically scheduled per week:
+18hours per week: 4 days per year
14-17 hours per week: 3 days per year
Less than 13 hours per week: 2 days per year
