Commercial Electrician

Description:

The Commercial Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and supporting electrical systems on commercial construction projects. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical theory, the ability to interpret drawings and specifications, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship. As part of a growing electrical trade within the company, this position may involve a mix of hands-on work, learning, and assisting more experienced electricians in both independent and team-based environments.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities

Assist with and perform a range of commercial electrical tasks, including:

  • Install, inspect, maintain, repair, and replace electrical components and systems, including wiring, fixtures, insulated cables, panels, transformers, circuit breakers, controls, receptacles, and lighting
  • Interpret and work from electrical drawings, schematics, and project specifications
  • Install conduit (EMT, rigid, flexible, and other types as required)
  • Pull, terminate, test, and troubleshoot wire and cable systems
  • Conduct fault finding, testing, repair, and preventative maintenance on electrical equipment
  • Perform rough-in, trim-out, punch list, and closeout activities
  • Perform basic layout work using tapes, levels, lasers, and other precision tools
  • Accurately measure, cut, bend, and install materials to project requirements
  • Conduct regular inspections and checks on electrical equipment to ensure proper operation
  • Accurately log billable hours and complete required documentation
  • Coordinate shutdowns, repairs, and daily tasks with foremen, supervisors, superintendents, operators, and other trades
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and heavy equipment as required
  • Work safely from ladders, lifts, and elevated surfaces; climb as necessary to perform job duties
  • Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work areas
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and all electrical safety protocols
  • Comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), state and local building codes, OSHA regulations, company policies, and jobsite safety requirements
  • Support productivity, quality standards, and project schedules
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Education and/or Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred, but not required)
  • Licensed Journeyman Electrician, Apprentice Electrician, or willingness to obtain the appropriate license
  • Prior experience in commercial electrical work, construction, or general labor is preferred but not required
  • Good understanding of electrical theory and commercial electrical systems
  • Experience using a variety of electrical tools, test equipment, and materials related to the trade
  • Basic understanding of construction processes, job site safety, and trade coordination
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the electrical trade

Certificates, Licenses, Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Reliable transportation to and from job sites required

Physical Demands

  • Frequent sitting and manual tasks (handling tools, wiring, materials).
  • Occasional movement: walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and working overhead.
  • Ability to safely use ladders, lifts, and work at heights
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Visual acuity required for reading drawings, color-coded wiring, and detailed electrical work.
  • Must hear adequately to respond to verbal instructions, warning bells, and alarms.
