The Commodity Buyer is responsible for the strategic sourcing, procurement, and supplier management of assigned production materials/commodities (e.g., metals, plastics, electronics, castings) from the initial customer acquisition (quoting) phase through to series production and end-of-life. This role ensures the procurement of high-quality components at the best total cost, driving annual cost reduction targets (VA/VE) while supporting global commodity management strategies to mitigate supply risk.

THE POSITION

The Commodity Buyer is responsible for the strategic sourcing, procurement, and supplier management of assigned production materials/commodities (e.g., metals, plastics, electronics, castings) from the initial customer acquisition (quoting) phase through to series production and end-of-life. This role ensures procurement of high-quality components at the lowest total cost, driving annual cost-reduction targets (VA/VE) while supporting global commodity management strategies to mitigate supply risk.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Acquisition & Sourcing (Pre-Award)

• Lead Request for Quote (RFQ) processes, including bid analysis, supplier selection, and negotiation of piece price, tooling, and terms.
• Work closely with Sales and Engineering during the quoting phase to develop "should-cost" models.
• Support new program launches by ensuring supplier readiness and capacity validation.
• Select suppliers based on QCD (Quality, Cost, Delivery) criteria.

Supplier Management & Development (Production Phase)

• Manage supplier relationships and performance, ensuring adherence to quality (PPM) and delivery schedules.
• Maintain purchase order prices in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, AS400).
• Conduct supplier audits and site visits to assess production capabilities and capacity.
• Resolve disputes, including delivery shortages or invoice discrepancies.

Strategic Purchasing & Global Commodity Management

• Strategy Implementation: Execute regional/global commodity strategies in collaboration with the Global Purchasing Team to optimize the supply base (footprint, technology, cost).
• Cost Management: Drive annual price reductions, negotiation of long-term agreements (LTAs), and VA/VE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering) initiatives to achieve productivity targets.
• Market Analysis: Analyze global market trends for raw materials and commodities, providing input for cost modeling and benchmarking.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or Business Administration.
• Experience: 3–5 years of experience in purchasing, specifically within Tier 1 or Tier 2 automotive manufacturing.
• Technical Skills: Proficient in ERP/MRP systems (SAP preferred), advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Knowledge: Understanding of APQP, IATF 16949, GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing), and blueprint reading.
• Soft Skills: Strong negotiation, conflict management, and communication skills.
• Mobility: Ability to travel (15–30%) for supplier visits.
