General Description

This internship position supports the Common Council Office's mission of assisting Common Council members as they navigate their duties as elected officials through policy research, communications, constituent relations, and general office support. This is a paid internship that lasts for up to four months or one semester, where you will work on meaningful projects that cultivate your areas of interest. Through this internship you will also have a chance to develop essential skills, broaden your network, learn more about future employment opportunities, and gain experience in public service.

The Common Council Office Intern will work collaboratively with Common Council Office staff members on projects involving policy research, communications, constituent relations, and alder support.

***Please note that the City of Madison's Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Interim Policy restricts the use of AI to conduct official City business. The Policy establishes a pause on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) for official City of Madison business. During the pause, there will not be any new use cases without approval through the New Technology Request process. Meanwhile, a City of Madison team (“AI Team”) of subject matter experts will continue to develop guidelines for using AI tools. This policy applies to all use of generative AI systems by employees and contractors while doing work for the City of Madison. Generative AI systems include, but are not limited to, ChatGPT, Google Bard, Dall-E, and Bing Chat. Generative AI does not refer to algorithms that a person defines, such as a human-created calculation in a spreadsheet. This policy does not prohibit you from using approved internet search engines. However, this policy does apply to any generative AI modules of these products, such as ChatGPT. Users must not input any City data in search engines, nor ask them to generate new content using AI. AI systems approved through the New Technology Review (APM 3-20 (Download PDF reader)) are not prohibited by this pause.***

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities



  • Policy Research: Conduct policy research and assist with the preparation of policy reports.
  • Communications and Community Engagement: Plan and develop marketing initiatives and complete projects related to branding, content creation, and social media marketing for alder events and Council initiatives. Update website and develop website content.
  • Alder Support and Constituent Relations: Assist with new alder onboarding activities. Respond to phone calls, emails, and other written communications.
  • Perform Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an Associate's, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree program.

  • Graduates from such programs since May 2024 will also be considered.

  • Participation in an employment program pre-approved by the City of Madison listed below since May of 2024.
