The Centre County Library in Bellefonte is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Part-Time Communications Assistant with digital savvy and excellent communication skills to join our team. Qualified applicants should have the ability to connect library services and resources to a diverse community. The Communications Assistant is a vital part of the Library's effort to build its public relations strategies and awareness of library programs, services, and collections among the communities we serve. This 20-22 hour per week position offers regularly scheduled shifts, with the possibility of occasional evenings and weekends. Salary starts at $16/hour.

JOB SUMMARY: This is a part-time position responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing communications strategies, and promoting services and programming throughout the Centre County Library and Historical Museum (CCLHM) service area. The position will be scheduled at 22 hours per week and may include occasional evenings and weekends. Additionally, this position serves as a Circulation Desk Assistant at the Bellefonte library and at other branch locations as needed and attends monthly manager team meetings.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: the duties described below are indicative of what the Communications Assistant may be asked to perform. In addition, other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Independently conceptualize, collaborate with colleagues and/ or stakeholders, and/ or produce graphic design of publications for in-house and outsourced brochures, fliers, bookmarks, information pieces, signage, pamphlets, bulletins, and newsletters.
  • Serves as webmaster, maintaining and optimizing the library’s virtual branch. Conceptualizes and collaborates with colleagues to develop and post content and graphics for the Library’s website.
  • Prepares stakeholder messaging, press releases, brochures, annual reports, email blasts, and other communications as assigned.
  • In collaboration with other team members and/ or individually creates content for Facebook, Youtube, Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, and other online channels. Serves as primary administrator for social media accounts in conjunction with the Community Engagement & Marketing Manager.
  • Collaborates with the Community Engagement & Marketing Manager to handle publicity and communications for all library programs, events, cancellations, and closings.
  • In coordination with the Community Engagement & Marketing Manager, prepares notices, bookmarks, posters and other informational and promotional materials for library services, events, and resources. May also prepare promotional and informational materials for other library locations under the direction of the Branch manager and/or Youth Services staff.
  • Participates in tabling and engagement events as scheduled with the Community Engagement & Marketing Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required at the time of hire and for the continuation of employment.

  • Undergraduate or Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience in marketing, social media management, and stakeholder communications.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with typical public library services and programming.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace, and Canva.
  • Must provide PA Criminal History record, Childline Child Abuse clearances and FBI Fingerprint check prior to beginning employment and when renewals are required.

  • Familiarity with social media promotion and marketing trends.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, to set goals and prioritize work.
  • Ability to contribute to a team working environment. Willingness to assist and support co-workers, contribute ideas, maintain flexibility and adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to maintain the reputation and integrity of the Centre County Library & Historical Museum as reflected in the organization mission, goals, and social media policy.

  • Must be able to stand at a Circulation Desk for a minimum of a 2-hour shift and shelve library materials on 6ft high shelving and floor level.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs, and push loaded book carts.
  • Must have a current driver’s license or access to reliable transportation to the main office, library branch locations and outreach sites.

Pay: From $16.00 per hour
