The Communications Intern supports the Office of the Superintendent by assisting with the development, creation, and dissemination of clear, engaging, and timely communications for internal and external stakeholders. This role plays a key part in telling the district’s story by highlighting school and district initiatives, events, achievements, and priorities through digital media, newsletters, and social platforms.
The intern will work closely with the Superintendent and executive-level staff, gaining hands-on experience in high-level public-sector communications, messaging strategy, and stakeholder engagement within a school district setting.
This is a non-benefited, grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon grant funding. The position has the potential to lead to a full-time, permanent role within the district, based on performance, organizational need, and available funding.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the development of social media content across district platforms, including post creation, scheduling, and basic performance tracking
- Draft, edit, and proofread written communications such as newsletters, announcements, web content, talking points, and internal updates related to school and district initiatives
- Create engaging digital content (graphics, visuals, short videos) for use across multiple stakeholder audiences, including families, staff, students, and community partners
- Support communications related to school events, district milestones, community partnerships, and superintendent initiatives
- Assist with photography and basic photo and/or video editing for district and school events, as needed
- Collaborate with executive staff, central office departments, and school-based personnel to gather stories, visuals, and content
- Ensure all communications align with district priorities, branding standards, and messaging expectations
- Maintain professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality when handling sensitive information
- Perform additional communications-related duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
Required Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to clarity, tone, and audience. A Strong Humanities background is a plus.
- Demonstrated technological proficiency and comfort working across digital platforms
- Familiarity with social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn) and content best practices
- Experience using Canva for graphic design and digital content creation (preferred)
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office, including Google Slides/PowerPoint and Excel
- Basic photography experience; photo and/or video editing skills are a plus
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, executive-level office environment
Confidentiality & Professional Expectations- This position requires strict adherence to confidentiality, as the intern will work closely with the Superintendent and the executive leadership team
- The intern must exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion when exposed to sensitive district information, communications, and decision-making processes
Work Schedule & Availability- Must be available min 20 hours per week during regular business hours. Flexible schedule, some hybrid work hours considered
- Must have flexibility for occasional evening events, such as Board of Education meetings, community forums, athletic or district events
Preferred Background- Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, education, or a related field
- Demonstrated interest in public education, community engagement, or public sector communications

Hourly rate: $24.00 hr
