This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Community Enrichment Teacher - GED - Hereford who will be all-in on our mission and who is responsible for delivering high-quality, learner-centered instruction to adult students pursuing a High School Equivalency (HSE) credential. This position includes teaching core academic subjects aligned with General Educational Development (GED) preparation, supporting curriculum development, maintaining subject matter expertise, and participating in instructional planning and program assessment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's Degree.

Preferred: Master's Degree in Education or related field.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Two (2) years of teaching, tutoring, or other instructional experience in any setting.

Preferred: Experience with Blackboard or similar LMS (training provided); curriculum development experience, particularly in digital/online formats; experience working with diverse adult learner populations; and, advanced digital skills including educational software, video conferencing tools, and digital assessment platforms.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive instruction for High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation, while offering support across subject areas using online curriculum tools.
  • Deliver assigned instructional responsibilities in GED courses, including lesson planning and classroom or online instruction, in alignment with the established master course curriculum.
  • Ensure all lessons follow the approved departmentalized pacing guide and, once available, are selected from the lesson plan bank unless otherwise approved. (Note: The lesson plan bank is currently in development and expected to be completed by Spring 2026.)
  • Create and apply strategies to improve literacy and critical thinking skills; conduct regular assessments to measure learning outcomes and prepare students for exams such as the Texas Success Initiative (TSI).
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, and achievement in accordance with program and institutional guidelines.
  • Contribute to curriculum development efforts and actively participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in adult education.
  • Hold regular office and computer lab hours to provide individualized academic support and facilitate student learning outside of scheduled class time; availability may vary based on program needs.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors and staff to support program initiatives, including student recruitment, retention, and continuous program improvement.
  • Promote student transition and enrollment in Amarillo College credit-bearing programs by integrating academic and career pathway discussions into instructional content.
  • Assist students in navigating college systems such as registration, advising, and support services to facilitate a successful transition into postsecondary education or workforce training.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expertise in teaching Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency curriculum, with knowledge of adult learning theory and best practices.
  • Ability to design and deliver differentiated instruction that accommodates diverse learning styles, language backgrounds, and cultural perspectives.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, independently and collaboratively, while building positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Proficient in the use of educational technology, including learning management systems (LMS), digital assessment platforms, and virtual classroom tools.
  • Skilled in managing virtual classrooms and troubleshooting basic technical issues to ensure smooth instructional delivery.
  • Competence in creating, adapting, and integrating digital learning materials to support a wide range of student needs and skill levels.
  • Knowledge of assessment methodologies and data-driven instructional strategies to enhance student learning and track progress.
  • Ability to balance traditional instructional methods with technology-enhanced teaching in both face-to-face and online learning environments.
  • Familiarity with best practices in student engagement, academic support, and accurate management of student records and educational data.
  • Ability to foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment through effective classroom management and a student-centered teaching approach.

Salary: Amarillo College follows a lag pay strategy, with starting offers typically between the minimum and midpoint of the pay grade, rarely reaching the maximum to support long-term growth within each position.

Pay grade 8 Amarillo College Pay Grades (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or maneuver office supplies as needed.

Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events if necessary.)

Work Environment: This position operates in a classroom environment, routinely uses standard office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, copy and fax machines, filing cabinets) and is in a high traffic area with continual interruptions. Software commonly used includes Microsoft Office, Colleague, and various other educational applications. Work may also be performed outside of the office and with little to no supervision.
