COMMUNITY IMPACT SPECIALIST

The Dayton Metro Library is hiring a full-time Community Impact Specialist for the Dayton Metro Library. This position is based at the Main Library, but it will sometimes need to be out in the community connecting with our community partners that are nonprofit or grant-funded in nature. This position provides a lot of support for those seeking grants, working with volunteer boards, or seeking charitable contributions. This role does not have fundraising duties; however, the successful candidate will be expected to teach others fundraising, nonprofit leadership, and grant writing/ evaluating. Join our team today!

Essential Job Duties

  • Develops and maintains community partnerships to address the needs of the community within the specialized focus area. Serves as a liaison with community organizations, sector leaders, and service agencies. Attends community meetings and events, and gives presentations as requested.
  • Coordinates the development of direct services and system-wide initiatives for patrons and partners within the specialized focus area. Plans, implements, and evaluates ongoing services and works with various departments across the Library to ensure the delivery of responsive services that meet community needs and align with Library priorities.
  • Develops, delivers, and/or coordinates ongoing system-wide training related to the specialized focus area to increase awareness, understanding, and responsiveness to community needs throughout the organization. Establishes and maintains guidelines and objectives for Library staff who work with members from the specialized focus area community. Conducts meetings, workshops, and provides instruction and assistance for staff.
  • Supports system-wide programming efforts related to the specialized area of focus, such as National Small Business Week, National Public Health Week, National Nonprofit Day, etc.
  • Provides advice and recommendations on public service policies and practices to develop and maintain a collaborative atmosphere for patrons and community partners within the specialized area of focus. Displays knowledge, communicates current trends, and implements best practices to ensure community impact within the specialized area of focus.
  • Collaborates with and advises Collection Development on topics, issues, related collections, databases, and resources within the specialized area of focus. Makes recommendations for both selection and deselection in relevant subject areas across all age ranges.
  • Provides patrons and community partners with instruction in the use of Library materials and resources. This can include assistance in reference, readers' advisory, databases, and resource navigation for general Library resources and those within the specialized focus area.
  • Prepares, submits and analyzes required department reports. Ensures proper records management. Attends applicable department and Library meetings. Assists with system-wide programs, activities, and initiatives. May be required to chair a Library committee related to the specialized area of focus.

Job Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (such as Master’s Library and Information science) or its equivalent in education and experience is required.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with community officials, leaders, organizations, the public and the staff.
  • Ability to connect with internal and external partners to positively impact initiatives in specialized focus areas.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret reference resources, general business periodicals, professional journals, policy and procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence clearly and informatively.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, patrons, and members of the community individually and in a group setting.
  • Ability to develop and deliver programs.
  • Ability to develop services and programs to meet community needs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with confrontational individuals and/or challenging situations.

Work Schedule: The work schedule of this position varies with some evenings and occasional Saturday shifts required. *Subject to change*


Transportation: Valid driver’s license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required for driving own vehicle for Library-related obligations OR has access to reliable and efficient* transportation. (*Definition of efficient is that employee can travel to and from required work obligations within Google Maps’ specified timeframe.)


Compensation and Benefits: The starting hourly rate for this position is $25.73. (Those applicants with a relevant Master’s degree may qualify for the professional offset, which would increase the hourly rate by $3.09 per hour.) Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement.
