Foster meaningful connections, drive public education, and enhance
community engagement as a Community Relations Specialist!

The Honolulu Fire Department, Support Services Division, is hiring a Community Relations Specialist III in Honolulu. This position plans, organizes and coordinates the HFD's community relations programs and events, and assists in the planning and carrying out of the HFD's fire safety and public education programs to support the Department's mission to provide for safety through prevention and preparedness.

What You Will Do:
  • Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate internal HFD events, programs, and activities such as Fire Fighter Recruit graduation, promotion, and commendation ceremonies, funeral services, Honolulu Fire Museum and Education Center, HFD Youth Fire Prevention and Intervention Program, and Fire Prevention Week.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate HFD's participation in City sponsored and community-partnered events, programs, and activities such as Mayor's Service Awards, Neighborhood Board, lei draping ceremonies, Hawaii Food Bank, Blood drives, parades, and dedications.
  • Facilitate the design, development, distribution, and evaluation of the HFD fire and life safety program resources and materials.

Special Working Requirements:
  • May be subject to after-hours, holidays, weekend work, and overtime in emergency situations.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with major work in business or public administration, the social sciences or a related field.


Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.

For example:
1. Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level experience) in community relations activities may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.

The education requirement must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Verification Requirement: In order to be given credit for your education, clearly list your education credentials on your application. As part of the hiring process, you may be asked to furnish documentation to verify your education to satisfy this education qualification requirement. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of general administrative experience, one of which shall have involved working for a community, civic, or similar service organization.

Applicable Skills:
  • Knowledge of principles of organization and administration.
  • Knowledge of public relations.
  • Knowledge of government functions, programs, and services, and their local jurisdictional differences; and characteristics and peculiarities of the community served.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate activities of others.
  • Ability to relate well to people and work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of program and recommend improvements.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
