Comptroller – Construction

Job Overview:
We are a top-tier commercial construction company seeking a seasoned Comptroller who loves working with people, is highly organized, and wants to be part of the team that shapes our region.

This pivotal role involves ensuring accurate accounting (AP, AR, payroll, cash flow and financial reporting), maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and providing strategic financial guidance to support the organization’s growth and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in construction job cost accounting, governmental and non-profit financial practices, and advanced expertise in financial software systems.

Daily Operations & Job Costing:

  • Oversee daily accounting operations including AP, AR, general ledger, and payroll/benefits (Health, Dental, Vision, Pension).
  • Track and allocate costs (labor, material, equipment, subcontractors) to specific jobs and projects.
  • Prepare and analyze the Current-Work-in-Progress (CWIP) schedule monthly to ensure accurate over/under billing and margin recognition.

Construction-Specific Financial Controls:

  • Manage AIA (American Institute of Architects) progress billings, payment applications, and retainage receivable.
  • Oversee subcontractor/vendor compliance, including collecting lien waivers and insurance certificates before releasing payments.
  • Handle certified payroll reporting and ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws (Missouri/Illinois) for public projects.

Cash Flow, Risk & Compliance:

  • Monitor and control corporate cash flow, including project-level forecasting.
  • Manage banking relationships, lines of credit, and equipment financing.
  • Work directly with surety underwriters to support and maintain the company's bonding capacity.
  • Complete audits, financial compliance activities, and manage any outsourced financial tasks.

Systems & Strategy:

  • Work with management to select and maintain financial software.
  • Develop and enforce the company's financial policies and procedures.
  • Create and complete financial reporting (daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred.
  • Extensive experience in construction accounting involving complex project-based financial management.
  • Experience with AIA billing, lien waivers, and retainage tracking.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, SOX compliance standards, governmental accounting practices, and non-profit accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with accounting software such as Timberline/Sage 300 Construction Software; experience with financial management systems is essential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel required).
  • Demonstrated expertise in cash management, account reconciliation, financial report writing, budgeting, forecasting and technical accounting issues.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data accurately and communicate findings clearly.
  • Familiarity with regulatory reporting requirements related to construction projects or public sector funding sources is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to lead teams effectively while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Pay Range:

$80,000.00 - $130,000.00 commensurate with experience
