The City of Independence is seeking friendly, reliable, and customer‑focused individuals to join our Parks & Recreation team as Seasonal Concession Stand Workers/Cashiers . In this role, you will help create a positive experience for visitors at the Independence Baseball/Softball Complex and Independence Aquatic Center by providing efficient food service, maintaining clean facilities, and supporting daily operations.

Position Overview

• Status: Seasonal–Temporary (maximum 120 working days)


• FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt

The Role

As a Concession Stand Worker/Cashier, you will be responsible for delivering prompt and courteous service while preparing food, operating a point‑of‑sale system, and keeping facilities clean and well‑stocked. You will provide customers with friendly, prompt, complete, and efficient food and beverage service and become familiar with all aspects of stand operations.

You will support event operations by maintaining restrooms, stocking supplies, and ensuring all checklist items are completed before the end of each shift. This role requires dependability, teamwork, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Customer Service & Sales: Prepare and serve food and beverages; accurately record financial transactions; operate the point‑of‑sale system; make correct change. 

Facility Cleanliness: Clean and stock restrooms, wipe counters, empty trash, wash equipment/utensils, and maintain neat work areas.  

Inventory & Stocking: Assist with inventory of food, beverages, and merchandise; stock shelves and supplies as needed. 

Operational Support: Follow all checklists, remain on duty until all games and tasks are complete, and perform additional duties as assigned. 

Professional Conduct: Maintain a courteous and friendly attitude toward customers and co‑workers.

Qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge & Skills: Ability to safely prepare food; strong communication skills; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to work well in groups and maintain discipline. 

Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years old to serve alcohol. 

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. bend, stoop, stand, and perform general physical tasks. The ability to lift items such as bulk popcorn, oil, and cases of beverages. 

Work Style: Positive, enthusiastic outlook; strong human relations skills; ability to maintain effective working relationships. 

Licensing: Valid Iowa driver’s license preferred (not required). 

Availability: Hours vary by season (May–Labor Day) and include after‑school, evening, and weekend shifts. No guaranteed weekly hours.

Work Environment

This position works primarily indoors within concession facilities but requires frequent movement between indoor and outdoor areas. Workers may experience heat, humidity, wet conditions, and noise from events. The job is considered safety‑sensitive , particularly regarding food safety.
