The Opportunity

As a Journeyman Cement Finisher I, you'll play a direct role in delivering the quality, appearance, and durability our clients expect.

You'll perform core finishing operations while developing greater independence, technical expertise, and understanding of project execution. Working under the guidance of experienced foremen and superintendents, you'll help ensure every concrete placement meets Alpha's standards for safety, precision, and craftsmanship.

Success in this role means consistently producing quality work, understanding finishing timing and grade requirements, and continuing to develop toward advanced journeyman proficiency.

What You'll Do

Safety & Quality First

You'll:

  • Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and jobsite procedures.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments.
  • Maintain awareness of site conditions and finishing-related hazards.
  • Perform work according to project specifications and quality standards.
  • Identify and communicate quality concerns or field conflicts proactively.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Concrete Finishing Operations

You'll help transform fresh concrete into finished work that stands the test of time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Rodding and leveling freshly placed concrete to required grades and tolerances.
  • Edging and jointing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, slabs, and flatwork.
  • Performing floating, troweling, brooming, and texturing operations.
  • Recognizing proper finishing timing and concrete set characteristics.
  • Assisting with curing and protection of finished concrete surfaces.
  • Maintaining consistent quality while meeting production goals.
  • Safely operating and maintaining finishing tools and equipment.

Grade Control & Plan Awareness

You'll continue building the technical knowledge required to become a highly skilled concrete professional.

You'll:

  • Read and interpret basic construction plans and specifications.
  • Understand elevations, slopes, dimensions, and finish requirements.
  • Work from grade stakes, benchmarks, and layout references.
  • Verify work meets specified grades and dimensional requirements.
  • Communicate discrepancies or field issues to supervisors.
  • Develop a broader understanding of project sequencing and pour planning.

Teamwork & Project Support

Great finishers make the entire crew better.

You'll:

  • Follow daily work plans and communicate effectively with supervisors.
  • Coordinate with laborers, carpenters, operators, and fellow finishers.
  • Support efficient workflow during placement and finishing operations.
  • Help prepare tools, equipment, and materials for daily production.
  • Contribute to a positive, productive team culture.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Concrete Foreman or Superintendent.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Previous concrete finishing experience or demonstrated readiness to perform journeyman-level finishing work.
  • Ability to perform finishing operations safely and efficiently.
  • Basic understanding of concrete placement and finishing techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of concrete placement, finishing, curing, and protection practices.
  • Familiarity with grade control concepts and finishing tolerances.
  • Ability to recognize concrete set characteristics and proper finishing timing.
  • Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to crew success.
  • Desire to continue learning and advancing within the trade.

Physical Requirements

This role requires regular physical activity in active construction environments.

Candidates must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Safely operate finishing tools, hand tools, and construction equipment.
  • Navigate uneven terrain and active concrete placement operations.

Requirements (Conditions of Employment)

Employment at Alpha Inc. is contingent upon:

  • Completion of standard pre-employment screening.
