A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in female reproductive health, providing routine exams, diagnosing and treating diseases, and offering family planning advice. They perform procedures like pelvic exams and Pap smears, prescribe medication, and can perform surgeries. Some gynecologists are also obstetricians (OB/GYNs), who provide medical care related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. Key responsibilities

  • Routine and diagnostic exams: Conduct regular check-ups, including pelvic exams, Pap smears, and breast exams.
  • Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the female reproductive system, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hormonal imbalances, endometriosis, fibroids, and various cancers.
  • Preventive care: Advise patients on disease prevention, cancer screenings, and reproductive health issues.
  • Family planning: Provide guidance on family planning and birth control options.
  • Procedures and surgeries: Perform diagnostic tests like ultrasounds and biopsies, and perform surgical procedures as needed, such as hysterectomies or laparoscopies.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth: For those who are also obstetricians (OB/GYNs), responsibilities include providing prenatal care, delivering babies, and managing postpartum recovery.
  • Patient education: Educate patients on their health and treatment options.
  • Collaboration: Work with other healthcare professionals, such as midwives, nurses, and other specialists, to provide comprehensive patient care.
