Job Summary

Consultant is responsible for providing care for his/her patients (inpatient and outpatient) maintaining a high level of professional performance in accordance with: professional medical ethics and JCIA/CBAHI standards, hospital medical by laws, laws of the Ministry of Health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and any other applicable regulations according to the departmental quality plan.

Providing effective leadership of the department, maintaining an appropriate quality plan using measurable performance improvement standards in the field of gynecology and obstetrics.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures that a superior quality of medical treatment, compassion and understanding is given to every patient served at the National Hospital.
  • Provides patient care within the parameters of professional competence as reflected in the scope of clinical privileges for both in patients and out patients.
  • Practices within the framework of clinically relevant and scientifically valid standards, guidelines and criteria.
  • Conducts daily ward rounds alone or as a team to formulate a multi disciplinary treatment plan.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on patients within the specialty range.
  • Assesses and refers appropriate patients under medical care to other facilities and accepts referrals of patients in the specialty field.
  • Participates in the on call rota of the department for patient care and admission.
  • Responds to emergencies to offer advice and actively participate with problems, if required, related to the specialty.
  • Observes and upholds patients' rights of security, confidentiality and privacy.
  • Maintains accurate, timely and legible patient medical records.
  • Has a leadership role in organizational performance.
  • Supervises duties of assigned junior staff.
  • Provides leadership for performance improvement functions in the process of measurement, assessment and improvement of both clinical and non clinical processes as part of the departmental quality plan.
  • Actively participates in Continued Medical Education (CME) through hospital activities (morning report meetings, grand rounds, clinical tutorials and seminars, journal club, radiology or clinico pathological conferences) and through national and international meetings, conferences and symposia.
  • Active participation in training programs related to the field and organization within the hospital for training of junior medical staff and in service training for nursing staff and technicians.
  • Continuously updates knowledge in the medical field and upgrades skill level.
  • Participates in committee meetings (Quality Improvement, Infection Control, etc).
  • Abides by departmental policies, procedures, hospital by laws, rules and regulations.
  • Educates patients/families as per their needs, implements the patient/family education process, and documents education in medical records.
  • Involves patients/families in the plan of care, respects their goals and choices.
  • Provides health promotion and health teaching through appropriate methods considering developmental level, literacy, readiness, language preference, culture and situations.
  • Allots time to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient education with appropriate documentation.
  • Carries out any other assignments as directed by hospital administration and/or department head within the realm of knowledge, skills and abilities.

Liaises With
  • Consultants of his/her specialty, other specialties within the department, consultants of other departments, nursing staff, labor & delivery, NICU and theatre staff, other health care professionals, patients and their families.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of required training in specialty and/or subspecialty, with Saudi/Arab or American Board certificate, membership and/or fellowship status in the United States and/or Canada, MRCOG or equivalent.
  • Higher qualifications in the specialty, if any.
  • Fluent in verbal and written English.
  • Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Has high standards of medical ethics and sense of responsibility as judged by supervisors and colleagues.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Medical by laws.
  • Academic affiliation.
Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years post qualification experience.
  • Additional experience in a sub specialty.

Current valid license to practice medicine in the area of specialty.

Registration in Saudi Medical Council and/or current license to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia.
