Consultant Physician-STMC- Pediatric Ophthalmology

The Consultant Physician is responsible for leading and supervising the delivery of high quality evidence-based care; effectively diagnosing, managing and treating all patients placed under the post holder's care. The Consultant Physician is expected to be an example of clinical excellence within his or her specialty and to provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise delivery of high quality evidence-based care.
  • Manage clinical activities of junior medical staff and oversee their patient care.
  • Comply with all hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
  • Practice appropriate utilization of organization resources.
  • Lead ward round; reassess inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis.
  • Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion.
  • Regularly review results of all investigations and modify treatment as required.
  • Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
  • Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
  • Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
  • Participate in and ensure the provision of out of hours (on call) coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.
  • Communicate clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.
  • Perform other clinical responsibilities as assigned.
Quality & Safety

Lead quality improvement within the Department. Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice. Support the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.

Education
  • Promote and assist in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Facilitate the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
  • Show commitment to Continuing Medical Education (CME).
Research & Publication

Promote and participate in clinical research and publication. Keep abreast of the current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.

Qualifications
  • Tier 1: NLT 2 years relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post board certification.
  • Tier 2: NLT 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.
