1. JOB PURPOSE
To provide specialized, patient-centric, and evidence-based consultant-level psychiatric care. The role involves leading a multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. The Consultant is responsible for ensuring compliance with the UAE’s new Mental Health Law, particularly regarding patient rights, involuntary admission procedures, and ethical practice .
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESClinical Care
- Assessment & Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including risk assessments for self-harm or harm to others, for a diverse population (including Emiratis and expatriates).
- Treatment Planning: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans integrating pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and psychosocial rehabilitation.
- Intervention: Manage complex cases including Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, and substance use disorders.
- Admissions Management: Oversee voluntary and compulsory admissions strictly in accordance with Federal Law No. (10) of 2023. Ensure all documentation for "Compulsory Admission for Evaluation" or "Compulsory Admission for Treatment" is completed accurately and submitted to the local Oversight and Follow-up Committee within mandated timeframes (e.g., 6 working days) .
- Ward Management: Conduct daily consultant-led ward rounds. Ensure the safe use of restrictive practices (physical restraint or isolation) only in emergencies and for the minimum duration required, per legal guidelines .
- On-Call Duties: Participate in the on-call roster, providing 24/7 coverage for emergencies, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays .
Legal & Ethical Compliance (Crucial for UAE)
- Patient Rights: Ensure all patients receive the "Patient Bill of Rights" upon admission. Respect the patient’s right to work; termination of employment based solely on a mental health condition requires a specialized medical committee report .
- Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information, adhering to UAE Federal Law No. (2) of 2019 concerning the use of ICT in health fields.
- Informed Consent: Obtain valid informed consent for all treatments. In cases where a patient lacks capacity, adhere strictly to the legal hierarchy of guardians/representatives defined in the law .
Multidisciplinary & Administrative
- Team Leadership: Lead and supervise a team comprising Specialist Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Registrars, Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, and Psychiatric Nurses.
- Collaboration: Liaise with primary care physicians, neurologists, and emergency departments to ensure continuity of care.
- Medical Records: Ensure timely and accurate documentation using the facility’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system .
- Quality Improvement: Participate in clinical audit, morbidity and mortality meetings, and JCI (Joint Commission International) or DOH (Department of Health) quality improvement activities .
