Consultation Lab Tech III/Phlebotomist

Reporting to the Donor Collections Manager and a dotted line to the NDC Operations and Technical Services Manager, position prepares special blood components and performs patient testing, as well as serve as a hospital services representative. Additionally, the performance of routine work related to the set up/tear down of mobile sites, the screening, collection and hematroning of blood and blood products during facility operations and mobiles as needed. This position has routine contact with hospital staff both by phone and in-person, frequent contact with the donor public, and blood clients requiring a high level of customer service.. This position rotates on call duties to provide afterhours consultation services and back up to hospital services on call staff.

In this role, you will:

Perform, interpret, and document in SafeTraceTX patient and routine donor serological testing. Prepare consultation reports.

Select, perform, and interpret more complex antibody identification, using specified special techniques as required to resolve blood investigative patient problem under the guidance of Technical Services Manager.

Communicate with internal and external customers regarding patient requests and samples.

Prepare reagents. Prepare wet samples for educational purposes. Enter rare cell samples into Access Data Base.

Record and place filled orders for antigen-negative red blood cells in SafeTraceTX.

Initiate and complete incoming and outgoing hospital orders in the BECS

Perform necessary quality control activities and documentation.Perform Driver I duties as well as acting Shift Coordinator duties when necessary.

Assists with the loading, unloading, set-up and tear down of equipment at mobile donor and/or NDC sites.

Performs pre-donation screening, venipuncture, and post venipuncture care of donors in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.

Rotate on-call duties to provide after hours services for consultation services and serve as a backup on-call Driver II.

Assists in orientating and training other staff members.

Must comply with OSHA, FDA, AABB, cGMP and other regulatory standards and adhere to the Blood Center’s standards and policies.

We need someone who has:

  • For MLTs, ASCP certification or equivalent required at hire.

  • For MLS with relevant experience, ASCP required upon hire; if new graduate, certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain certification within required time frame may lead to termination of employment.

  • Valid Texas Driver's License (TDL) plus acceptable driving record.

  • Must meet standards of The Blood Center’s Vehicle Safety Program

  • MLT (ASCP or equivalent) plus minimum 2 years of advanced and recent (within past 1-2 years) blood bank and immunohematology experience, preferred; or

  • MLS (ASCP or equivalent) with recent (within past 1-2 years) blood bank and immunohematology experience preferred;

  • or MLS new graduate eligible to take certification exam; certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain certification may lead to termination of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, toxic or caustic chemicals, and blood and/or blood components, as well as other bio-hazardous material. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job duties involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood with a risk of exposure to Hepatitis and HIV.
