Contract Accountant (Non Profit) Part Time

Duties

  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable processes using accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Perform bank reconciliations, general ledger reconciliations, and account analysis to maintain precise financial records
  • Conduct balance sheet reconciliation and account reconciliation activities to ensure data integrity across all financial reports
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial management activities to support organizational planning and decision-making
  • Support regulatory reporting requirements including compliance with SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) controls and LIHTC (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit) regulations where applicable
  • Contribute to internal audits by preparing audit schedules, supporting documentation, and implementing best practices for internal controls
  • Interpret complex financial concepts and prepare clear financial report writing for stakeholders; analyze financial reports for accuracy and insights
  • Maintain detailed records of journal entries, accrual accounting transactions, and other bookkeeping activities using PeopleSoft or similar financial software
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff or interns on accounting procedures, software use, and regulatory compliance

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in nonprofit accounting with knowledge of GAAP standards and federal/state regulatory requirements
  • Strong technical accounting skills including experience with SOX compliance, securities law, governmental accounting, and tax law such as wills, trusts & estate law
  • Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, PeopleSoft or similar platforms; advanced skills in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting
  • Familiarity with financial report interpretation, financial statement preparation, cash flow analysis, budget development, and forecasting techniques
  • Experience with account reconciliation processes including bank reconciliation and general ledger reconciliation
  • Knowledge of public accounting practices combined with hands-on experience in auditing or regulatory reporting is highly desirable
  • Excellent understanding of double entry bookkeeping principles including debits & credits; ability to perform detailed account analysis accurately
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to mentor team members effectively while managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated financial acumen with an ability to interpret complex financial data into actionable insights for diverse audiences
